The ViewLondon Review
Appearing to be just a run of the mill old man’s boozer, the evenings liven the old girl up, and it’s all the better for it.The VenueA well known pub, The Bedford’s size and location ensures it would make itself known to Balhamites regardless of the excellent entertainment on offer. Hogging the corner of Bedford Hill and Byrne Road this monolith of a pub boasts a convenient proximity to Balham station that makes it ideal for destination visitors. It really doesn’t look anything special inside either, a well kept but hardly stylish pub, with fixtures and fittings that you’d see in many an uninspiring chain. It’s only when the cavernous innards are fully opened that the jaw drops, with superb function rooms that play host to quality up and coming bands and some of London’s best comedy, for which the Bedford has a justifiably impressive reputation. There’s a small but charming little garden that was probably forced upon them by the smoking ban, but it’s a nice addition nonetheless.
The AtmosphereDue to the pub being rather faceless in itself, when there’s nothing going on it can be a little lifeless, especially in the day where you’re more likely to meet old timers sinking a whisky or two. But when the evening comes it’s a totally different animal, hosting live music, cabaret and comedy nights. This is one of the Bedford’s big pulls as it’s not unknown for a famous face to do a surprise set, and since comedian Arthur Smith lives nearby there’s every chance you could be lucky. Due to the renown of the acts you’ll find people visiting from all over London so don’t think it’ll just be full of locals, in fact they’re probably sick of the place. Comedy nights do get pretty busy though so be prepared to queue if you’re not early.
The DrinkThere’s a good selection of drinks available but not necessarily anything to get excited about. There are a few ales on tap that aren’t kept badly, and the lagers that sell pretty well are your usual fare of the well known European lot. The wine list isn’t extensive but is certainly does the job (especially the Chilean Casa Riva Savignon Blanc), and with most available by the glass it’s a nice option to have. Spirits are again, not adventurous, but more than adequate in the absence of a cocktail menu.
The Last WordThe superb entertainment The Bedford plays host to raises it from a run of the mill South London boozer into a reason to head to Balham. And long may that continue.
