Writing as somebody who *did* make it past this club's ludicrously subjective make-it-up-as-you-go-along door 'policy', I can confirm that your best efforts are rewarded by a venue with much more hype going for it than substance. Does 'anything go'? Of course it doesn't. The most risqué this place gets is equivalent to an edgy burlesque performance. There are occasional 'acts' on stage which are curious to enjoy, but anything but erotic. Anyone who thinks this equates to hedonism needs a good night out at a proper club where pumping music and rhythm whip the crowd into a throbbing mass. The Box is just a bunch of wealthy people (plus tragic wannabes) engaged in an overpriced circle jerk of mutual congratulation.
Save yourself the bother, don't believe the hype, and see to your 'needs' before leaving the house. Then get down with your bad self at any of London's superior, louder and more tolerant and accepting venues. There are some amazing places to enjoy but unless you're fixated by the need to be seen somewhere (even if it means a crappy night out) then The Box simply ain't it.
The most decadent and hedonistic club in London bar none. Reading through the comments on this page, it's obvious that people who give this place a low rating are bitter because they didn't make it past the queue. The hard truth is, if you're not wearing expensive clothes and you don't look the part, you won't get it. As for what goes on inside, my lips are sealed but put it this way, ANYTHING goes.
Hi people, The Box is pretentious. Its everything but not cool. Cabaret is the only good thing in there. Toilet attendant have more class then manager. Bartenders have high ego and hostess will turn you off. Taxi controller charge me double (50 to Highgate) because my wife was drunk?!?!? If you love music Djs are boring. But if you are thinking to go? Go! There are far more horrible places in London :)
The Box is the most daring and original club I have been to!!
The shows are awesome and you need to be open minded to see them. They are kind of like Torture Garden meets VIP Night club.. Some of shows are nothing short of amazing.. It makes shows at Cirque du Soir look a bit lame in comparison..
Raven the main performance host is awesome! 10/10..
The staff are pretty cool... As are the owners (there are several) who are normally about and probably the friendliest nightclub owners around..
The smoking terrace is sweet (like Maddox/Luxx) to meet and chat to people..
The Box has a main downstairs area which is where most of the tables are.. There are shows at 1am & 2am both lasting about 20 minutes.. Then upstairs in the smaller floor there is another show lasting 5 minutes at 3am.. Try and catch it all.
The Emperor's New Nightclub. Really, really horrible bouncers treating clients like dirt even though they're handing over outrageous sums for drinks. The main room smelled damp. The only saving grace was the hostesses, who were polite. Save yourself the bother - stay at home bossing yourself about in the mirror while drinking distinctly average wine and throwing handfuls of cash out of the window. For mugs only.
I absolutely love this place. The show they produce is flawless, intelligent and sexy, each of the performers offer a high standard of skill and imagination. They do use the same performers, but I have never seen them repeat the same material. The staff are very friendly, but sincerely not in an kiss azz way. The music is good and the clientele are not like the money grabbing WAGS you find in most clubs. It is difficult to get in, but each time I have gotten in I made sure to put on my glad rags and smile. Great fun!
We didn't get in. After forty minutes in the queue they spoke to us and said three guys, no way; that if we walked down the street and found three girls, any three girls, then we would be straight in but three guys, even wearing expensive suits, it wasn't going to happen.
So that's tip number one: have at least as many girls as guys in your party.
But, just as importantly, do not queue. The whole time we were there, not one person from the queue got let in - even parties of all girls, young and well dressed. You have to walk up to the rope, tell them you want to get in or you are going elsewhere, and you will get in.
If you are all girls, and look under twenty, then you don't even have to stop walking: they lift the rope when they see you coming.
The only exception to this was two guys who walked up and said they had a table and were let straight in, no questions asked. So you could probably blag you way in like this, as the people inside don't know what you said to the people outside.
The music that came out of the doors sounded the same as every other club, and the people who walked in looked and sounded no different from anyone else reasonably well dressed in Soho - but you'll have to ask someone else what the club is like, as this is just a review of the queue!
I went to the Box last Saturday for my stag do. My mates sot us in which did mean we avoided the queue. It had an interesting play list, the show wasn't all that shocking the staff were mixed some friendly some not so. As me and my brother didn't look like the money people mainly ignored us part from the transvestite who was the nicest person there. My recommendation is go if you want a sort of upmarket strip bar but if you've been to Amsterdam you might feel a little cheated. On the flip side most of my mates had a great time.
Went to the box on Saturday and after everything that I read I was gearing myself up for not being too disappointed if I didn't get in. Started queuing up at 10 ish and was told the doors open at 11.00. I would highly recommend if you do not have a table- then you should definitely queue early.
After waiting around 45 mins the bouncers came out and started scanning the queue for who they would let in and who they wouldn't. Its pot luck at this place- if you around 3k to spend on a table you are guaranteed entry otherwise its really based on how you look.
I managed to get extremely lucky and skipped the "guestlist" queue and "table" queue by talking to the manager and walked straight in :)
Staff were welcoming inside and the atmosphere was great! Good smart crowd, a bit preppy but definitely better than having some brainless bimbos that cheapen the place. Hope they stick to that policy to keeping it exclusive. So for the plastic/essex type girl-i wouldnt bother.
People dress smart and glamorous on a weekend but I have been told on a weekday a lot of the crowd come in alternative outfits.
I read that the show was shocking but to be honest I didn't think was THAT much different to any burlesque show that I have been to previously.
Drinks start at around £12 a cocktail so its not that much different to other London nightclubs.
All in all, I had a good experience and if you are lucky to get in, then its something different that London has to offer.
Enjoy :)
We found this Club by accident, we did not know anything about the -place, just got there on a Tuesday night, actaullay the aim was to go to a different club, when we spotted this one, the wooden door.
In a short summary, actually and surprisingly we really enjoyed the place and the show. Never been in a place like this before, but would return again! You have to be open-minded and relaxed and you can have a really good fun. And of course, you need a a couple of drinks definitely.
So enjoy the show, the night! Very-very unique...
I'll give it 3 stars as I'm quite mean. For me, 5 stars is the VIP at Pacha Ibiza with pre-party sushi at B.For. Anyway, as you know, Mrs M is damn hot so we always walk straight in. Entry is free. The staff were very friendly. Drinks are expensive. I suppose that combination meant that the barman felt able to leap over the bar and snog one of our party. Actually, she liked it. We got free shots. This place encourages the "anything goes" vibe, so random making out, dancing on stuff, doing shots etc is all part of the fun. Like a miniature music hall theatre. Pretty rammed. People were "cool" but a bit too cool for school if you know what I mean. I didn't see any horrid Eurotrash that Soho clubs are always full of though. Show was cool too but let's be honest, if you think some skinny bird doing a dance and then whipping her top off is outre, then you must live in a plastic bag. Plenty for the ladies too (note to self: must revisit that gym membership soon). Still, it's fun and "free" except for the drinks tax. Everyone seemed to be having a grand old time or were they just celebrating getting in? Why the three stars then Gezza? I hear you cry. Well the music is shite frankly. I don't want to hear "Tainted Love" when I go out in London. That's just a personal preference Gezza, you reply, you can't rate down the place cos you don't like cheese. Well I can and I just did, so there. I might go again is all I'm sayin'.
I love this place! yes it's a bit raunchy, but it's extremely classy at the same time! and they do amazing drinks, I go here every week...apart from the Wyld nightclub at the W hotel, it's the place to be and be seen in London right now ! So happy that it's not full of money grabbing girls, ready to pounce on your last inch of vodka! It's just a decent crowd that are out to have fun! Don't know why previous people have problems on the door, the door security are nice guys and are even humorous...Honestly can't fault this place! If you look good, dress well, i don't see a problem in getting in - maybe if your on the guest-list it will help.
The Box NY is one of my favorite places so my expectations were high. And i must say, well done The Box London. I loved it. Staff were really friendly and the shows were spot on. Will I come back... absolutely not. The crowd were awful. Full of very young super arrogant people who thought they were king and queen of the world. I got stepped on so many times that i left with bloody feet. I had so many drinks spilt over me that i had to throw my dress out. One guy pushed my girlfriend down the stairs and didn't even think to help her up or apologise. Instead we got lots of "elevator" looks and turned up noses.
When i go out i love to have fun, be happy and meet new people. The box london unfortunately is full of self absorbed people. Its a shame cause its a great concept and i LOVE The Box New York.
Simply the best club experience in London.
I haven't seen anything like this since NYC in the late 90's.
I am so bored of reading reviews by people who are bitter that the club wouldn't let them in! The whole point of exclusive places is they pick their clientele carefully. And thankfully the Box has the sense to turn away anyone (even reserved tables who would no doubt be big spenders) if they are going to detract from the image of ambiance of the club. Compare to the horrendous crowd at Movida, Aura et al. where as long as you have a black Amex you are VIP, and you see why the Box is so discriminating, and why the club is so so fantastic. My own experience there was this:
- door staff, charming, hostesses and bar staff also charming (and hot!)
- no cover charge to get in, which is nice considering the shows ans quality of service
- great, reasonably priced (for a west end club) drinks, though have heard tables are a bit above average £££, well over a grand
- the decor was perfect, just the right combination of music hall, bordello and very very cool club
- the crowd were the best ive seen in a london club. ever. half fashion, half euro. not a z-list sleb or footballer in sight. no sleazy city boys. just hot hot people having a wild time
- the shows, well, i dont want to say too much and spoil it for anyone, but they are sexy, provocative, raucous and very very entertaining, which, i guess is the main thing.
overall i think this is probably the most fun nightclub anywhere in the world right now.
It's not for everyone, but it's incredible. Without a doubt it is difficult to get into, but once you are there, the staff are attentive and friendly. The show is mad and although the drinks are incredibly expensive, there is no cover charge for the show, so I suppose it's not so bad. It is not really the den of sin the papers would have you believe, but is the most unique club experience in London at the moment. If you can get in, go!
RUDE RUDE RUDE
A major display of unnecessary rudeness by the guy at the door.
Firstly we were prevented the entrance as table guests with no right and no reason. Secondly after one hour wait in the cold, we had to put up with an ill-mannered person who seemed to think he was entitled to something nobody else is. We made the healthy decision to walk away.
Seriously unacceptable behaviour and it certainly should be corrected.
The Box is ex Soho Revue Bar so when it comes to the 'freak' thermometer it was more freaky before. what amazed me was the door policy where i believe the only real freak was the door guy who had the nerve not to allow table guests in for half an hour (at first at all and we were 5girls) on a table that made over 10k that night which spoiled the mood of everyone and we all left soon after. the show itself was interesting for people who never seen an s/m show or ever went clubbing to many popular similar themed nights around london. its basically a hassle to get in club with a kakadu at the door who will make sure your overly pricey night is ruined by his bad judgments. give it 6months to live, after the west end crowd checks it out and makes sure they're not missing much.
