Do you remember when members’ clubs really were for members only? Well, The Brompton Club is making a name for itself by (doggedly) bringing that back.

The Venue
The Brompton Club is fairly easy to find, within walking distance of South Kensington tube at the corner of the (rather fancy) Old Brompton Road and Queen’s Gate. It’s directly under the Kensington Hotel, so once you’re past the cloakroom – if you make it that far – you head straight downstairs into the action. The interior is pretty sexy, with dark woods, vivid greens and scarlet reds, but it’s classic rather than modern or trendy. There’s a dark and cosy dining area to one side, and the bar to the other with tables and booths for you to chill and relax at. Rumour has it that the owners went millions over-budget when creating this place, which isn’t clearly apparent from the décor. It’s nice rather than special.

The Atmosphere
The Brompton Club is impossible to get into unless you’re with a member – no discussion. Created by the brains behind venues including Mahiki and Whisky Mist, The Brompton takes things up a notch with regards to the members’ policy and all guests are expected to sign in. However, putting aside the uptight door policy, things are very relaxed inside. Early evenings are quiet, especially at the start of the week, so you can relax over a cocktail in the privacy of your booth without a great deal of interruption. This isn’t a place to pose, and the West Londoners who shell out £500 a year to join will no doubt welcome the opportunity to chill out and enjoy the company of fellow members. Things do liven up later in the evening as the music cranks up, but this is still no dance club.

The Music
The music takes a backseat at The Brompton, with DJs keeping things pretty quiet until midnight. The sounds are pretty eclectic – expect to hear anything from Eighties cheese to the usual contemporary chart, house and r’n’b.

The Drink
When you’re target market is Kensington trustafarians, you can pretty much charge what you like for a bottle of fizz with a sparkler in it, so be prepared to part with the big bucks if you’re planning to get tipsy here. Cocktails average a tenner, but you get the service to go with it. The staff are professionals with the ability to whip up any cocktail you can think of, and the bar is stocked with the premium spirits and champagnes you should demand at these prices.

The Last Word
The Brompton Club is a great place to spend a relaxed, boozy evening if you’ve got the cash and contacts. It’s worth the membership if you live nearby.
