The ViewLondon Review
This bijou club on Islington's City Road aims to bring a slice of the West End's private club scene to the outskirts of the more modish East London. But don't be fooled, it's designed for the hardcore clubber and doesn't kick its punters out until after day break.
The Venue
Sandwiched between a kebab shop and an off licence, The Doors is certainly inconspicuous - superficially, at least. There's a discreet red and white neon light outside announcing its existence but if it weren't for the bouncers, velvet rope and cluster of smokers outside, you would most certainly miss it.
Down some dark, steep stairs you'll find the main bar and dancefloor. The bar is small but well-stocked and normally manned by pouting European beauties. Along the walls of the dancefloor squishy, square sofas sit. Smoke machines and lasers add a retro feel. The rest of the venue is warren-like and feels like it's full of naughty secrets and there's a second, smaller bar at the back. An added curiosity is the toilet lids are mirrored - perhaps a nod to the very extended opening hours and dark house, underworld vibe.
The Atmosphere
Members club meets miniature superclub. The Doors has a £10 door charge, £8 before 11pm - not really worth it to be honest - a free cover charge policy would be likely to attract more punters. There's a membership option and it seems those who rock up every weekend get a cheeky concession. Because The Doors is quite small, relatively unknown and secreted away, it’s frequented by the same people - a mixture of local bar workers, their friends and Europeans thrilled there's a new place to party all night.
It's quite friendly - if you know who’s who - but if not the vibe is a bit cliquey. However, no one will look down at you for being trashed and the sofas are very comfy so you can float through the night at your leisure.
The Music
House, trance - relentless beats in a nutshell. Guest DJs Jimpster and Milton Jackson join residents Pash Ostovar and Matt Masters to play deep house. The mixing skills of the resident DJs aren't particularly exciting but the repetitiveness of the bass will keep the true house head going strong.
The Drink
It's rather pricey at The Doors and a spirit and mixer will set you back about £6 but they have quite a nice selection of Dutch Ketel One vodka. Going with the European club vibe there's a selection of holiday-type beers like Corona, Sol and San Miguel. No tap beer as they don't have a cellar and the wine list offers a nice house Pinot Grigio and Merlot for about £17. House bubbly is Alexandre Bonnet Blanc de Noirs Brut NV for £40 and if you're feeling flush there's Moet et Chandon for £60.
The Last Word
Dark and debauched sum this wee place up best. Expect a long night, a hole in your wallet and slightly deranged conversations outside whilst smoking. The Doors isn’t a bad spot for a night of clubbing and sweating.
