I was at the Gate last weekend with my friends taking advantage of my View Card! So we had an excellent meal with 50 percent discount. As I have Asian origins, I'm particularly critical with so-called 'Asian fusion kitchens' -so I had certain fears before this dinner. But the quality, the freshness and the taste of the food was high over my expectations! (I'm a regular customer of the party nights, but this was the first time I had dinner there.) I couldn't believe for that price the 6 of us could fill up our tummies:-)) The only thing that left a bitter feeling in me, is that there was a table of a dozen people sitting just next to us, and they were continuously harassing the waitress until she nearly burst into tears (and later, the extra waiting staff, who I guess just jumped in only because of their demanding behaviour...) They were extremely rude and I felt so embarrassed that I can't help the staff (I used to work in hospitality, maybe that's why I feel so bad when I see stupid customers torturing the staff). So after almost all of the staff (including the manager) were jumping around them licking their a***es to comfort them, they decided to do a great favour and...stayed all night (I guess these kind of people could only enjoy themselves by ruining other people's entertainment...) I wish the Gate always had that nice crowd what the place deserves.
Great restaurant with good music and even better service. I have become somewhat of a regular lately as I really enjoy the food and always receive the most friendly and efficient service. I must recommend the squid and make sure you try the cocktails!
I have been browsing for restaurants on this website and happened to come across the listing of my favorite local hangout in Notting Hill so thought I'd take a minute to write a quick review for what is one of the most fun places to visit in this part of town.
I have to say I was somewhat surprised to read some of the reviews on here as I always have an amazing time down at the gate and me and my girlfriends love their dim sum and 2 for 1 cocktails on weekdays! The guys are all super friendly and make us feel very welcome.
The best bit is that after some great food and fantastic cocktails we get to stay on for a good boogie (sometimes to the expence of a productive next day at work!) my favorite being Tuesday R&B nights and of course the weekend!
A big thank you to everyone down at the gate for providing us with a great local venue and making sure we always have a good time.
Celebrated my birthday at the gate last Saturday and had the most amazing experience! All my guests absolutely loved it and it was the perfect venue for my 30th birthday.
I booked the lounge area which was lovely and we arrived there early enough to order some food. The food was great, some of the best dim sum we've had in every long time.
Everyone was very friendly and the service was impeccable. I must say we were all fairly drunk by the end of the night and the staff were extremely helpful and gave us instructions on how to get a cab home.
Drinks were very good and very reasonably priced for a notting hill late night venue. To top it all up the DJ created a fun atmosphere where all my guests, younger and older, danced till the early hours. Everyone is still talking about my party at the gate and my wife is planning to book her birthday there next month. Look forward to going back and strongly recommend it as a great all round restaurant bar and club!
What a poor excuse for a restaurant/bar!! After our food taking up to an hour to arrive and our orders were mixed up/did not turn up! The waitress who had a check list to tick off as we ordered couldn't even do that right and she had no idea what was on the limited menu. When the vegetable gyozas didn't turn up and meat ones provided we sent them back. We then got told by the waiter that the chef was 'pissed off' as the meat gyozas were infact vegetarian. The waiter then proceeded to show us the bag of frozen vegetarian gyozas! If only that was it! Later my friend who ordered a red Thai curry was given a green curry and told by the manager that it was red...think he may be colour blind! Food was clearly packaged crap and the chef I doubt has ever cooked a proper meal in his life! I wish that was it but the men's toilet had puddles urine all over the floor. The manager just said it was like that as the building was old!
Please avoid this place as a place as staff are rude, the chef can't cook and the toilets are a health hazard!!
I been to the gate before after work around 8ish, its always had a chilled lounge feel to it, we normally only have a couple of drinks and grab a bite to eat (can not get enough of their dim sum) and then head out.
Last Friday myself and a group from work decided to stay on after our meal, grab a couple more cocktails, we did not expect the bar to turn into a night club, it really made our night!
The music was grate to have a dance to and the vibe was fun, Unexpected but defiantly appreciated.
Is gate better than studio54 on a Friday night, well i don't know.
i wasn't around back than, but it must have felt something like this.
last Friday after a hard day at work we decided to go for a few drink and one of my colleague suggested the gate, now he is in to music and bars and clubs so we trusted his suggestion and boy he was right.
we got there about 11 to the place it wasn't so busy than but within 20 minute the place was full and either the music got louder or i was drunker, either way it was great. the music was pumping all sort of styles mixed like nothing I've heard anywhere else, but than again i might've been a bit tipsy. anyway i had an great night dancing all my work stress away and definitely going back again just as soon as my wife goes to holiday .
Crazy expensive drinks and possibly watered down vodka. Went to the Gate on Friday and ordered (among other things) a large vodka cranberry from the bar: it cost £12.80. I watched the barman pour what looked like a quad-shot, and three-quarter fill the tall glass with vodka. It was so full the cranberry barely changed the colour when added. But I could barely taste the vodka (nor could a friend who tested it) and it had almost no effect! And I drank it fast and the ice was almost unmelted, it was the first drink of the night and I waited to see if there was an effect, but almost nothing which is odd as I am a light-weight. Either the ice overfills the glass not leaving much room or the vodka is dodgy. Either way, waste of money and a rip-off even if it was a proper drink.
I been to a lot of venue's in London, so when organizing my birthday, I wanted it to be perfect.
Their events manager took care of everything, food, drinks, decorations, i had an amazing time.
I recommend the Gate to anyone, even just for cocktail, but also if you want a party planed to every detail, this is the place.....
I had the best time out in Gate with my friends. We booked the lounge area next to the bar for my friend birthday. Great music fantastic cocktails and canapes and the staff simply magnificent, so helpfull and friendly. I felt like I'm in a House Party. This place will be my new base.
To sum up my experience at The Gate in one word: disappointment. Having pre-booked a table for 10 as part of a stag evening, I was most disappointed and frustrated with the lack of acceptable service and even more frustrated at the lack of managerial oversight. The main course took over an hour and twenty minutes to be served at which point the dim sung dishes were confused with no offering of clarification from the serving staff. This ghastly experience culminated in the bill taking over thirty minutes to be produced. A private party/function took precedent over a group booking. Compliments should be paid to the chef for a the high standard of food -- overshadowed lack of managerial know-how.

I have just read the last review and I have to say this is completely wrong as I was there last friday! I had the best time there and I am going there this Friday to watch the football and then stay on for the club! The DJ was excellent I had a great time with my friends.

Without a doubt THE WORST CLUB I have ever been to in 10 years of living in london.
Went in on a friday night 5 pound each to get in and three regular drinks cost £18.60 !!
Absolutre rubbish club save your money and head to anywhere but here.
I hope that this type of pretentious overpriced place doesnt spread as it should never cost that much for 3 regular dinks in such a bad venue
Just awful, as customers we dont have to put up with these poor excuses ripping us off.
NEVER EVER PICK THIS PLACE
1 star is really too much of a rating for this place
Good Crowd, good food and excellent cocktails.
Had such fun here on Saturday night, we had dinner at around 8.30 delicious dim-sum with loads of tasty dipping sauces. we were then able to keep out tables as a base for the club which starts around 10pm, we stayed until the end at 2am!!
The restaurant is really pretty with candles, pretty flowers and a modern classy look. it doesn't feel like a club in the early part of the evening its more a classy restaurant/cocktail bar. But the place transforms around 10.30 to a pumping club. Bloody loved it!
I was there on a saturaday to celebrate a mates birthday. We had a great time the music was great , beeing a bedroom dj I know a few thing s about djing the dj was excellent! Mixing like know one else I know of.
The drinks were good allthough a little pricy (6-50 cocktails around 8-00) from what I remember. Allthough those prices are normal in any decent place in the area. I didnt try the food, so not much I can say about that. All in all its a great place and it isnt that small as some reviews were saying? I am going there for ny Party!
I had been worried by other reviews of the gate, but went last week with a group of friends to eat and dance and was pleasantly surprised!
The gate has got a new chief and his food is amazing Asia style food. I recommend the Dim Sum! followed by the main of salmon with wasabi!!
after dinner the restaurant turned in to more of a club it got busy by 11 and we had a cocktail and a drink.
had a really enjoyable night there and thought i had to tell some one about it!
Awful, expensive, tiny and whatever the other dwarfs were called.
The toilets seemed to have an abandoned prison camp theme.
A round of six ordinary drinks cost £32 pounds. I will never go back but I doubt they'll care.
Me and a group of friends had a really fun night here last weekend. We had lots of dim sum and starters to share and they were really good and great value for money.
The restaurant was quite quiet earlier and cosy so we could talk and then we stayed on once it became a club and all had a great time!
the music was really good and the crowd of what seemed like regulars was unusual for this part of London, not too pretentious just up for a really good time.
It's a really friendly place and we stayed on the dance floor until 2am! Definitely going back next weekend!
Absolutely awful food! Straight from a supermarket freezer! The 'hot' dimsums were cold in the middle and the fried stuff was luke warm despite apparently being freshly made.
The food is a shambles and I'm surprised no one else has noticed?! The decor is quite basic and it is ridiculously small.
Just a tiny little dank room with no windows on the lower ground with awful food. Avoid, please.
I had a fantastic meal at The Gate recently. I went with a group of friends and shared a great selection of tapas. The menu was really interesting and the food delicious. Later on the place turned into more of a bar/club with great tunes that got everyone on the dancefloor until 2am! Really friendly place with a fun atmosphere.
I hadn't been to Gate Restaurant before but the venue was recommended to me and I had a thoroughly pleasurable evening. The food and service was OK and and was good value for money. The Gate restaurant has a nice clean decor too.
Gate is a bit too small, but it's easy to go to and my local.
I went to Gate a couple of Fridays ago and was very disapoinnted. Some of the bar staff seemed friendly but you had to wait a long time to get served. The venue itself is really small and pokey and the toilets really could do with updating and being cleaner.
The music at Gate is pretty bad and only the seriously drunk danced on what is called the dancefloor. The DJ couldn't mix and seemed really miserable. My mate asked twice for him to play a tune, only to be answered with a rude grunt!
Wouldn't recommend to go there.
Gate is one of my favourite restaurants in London. The food is lovely – for both veggies and meat-eaters alike. Try Gate’s green banana fritters – yummy.
