Billed as Europe's largest dress code venue this men-only bar is the place to be seen (and be a little obscene).

The Venue
The Hoist inhabits two spotlessly sandblasted arches underneath Vauxhall train station. Inside the bar areas lead to a labyrinth of darkly-lit nooks and crannies - one with a sling - and an overhead gantry with a genuine industrial hoist. There’s now even a walk-in shop called Fetish Freak next to the club and open late into the morning.

The Atmosphere
Cruising and posing in sexy gear is the order of the day. A strict dress code applies and is enforced. That means leather, uniform, rubber, (appropriate) denim, industrial and skinhead clobber. Boots are a must and sportswear and trainers generally a no-no. This dress code applies to all nights, except if it’s specifically stated for a special pervy party. One such exception is Sunday’s SBN (Stark Bollock Naked) where you have to go naked except for footwear (boots and shoes are OK). If in doubt, then call ahead; however, a limited number of boots are available at the coat-check if you rock-up unplanned in your trainers.

Inside a smorgasbord of weekly and rotating events awaits you including Rubber Muscle (rubber night obviously), Night Manoeuvres (uniform), Oi M8 (skinhead) and Rawhide (leather). Erm, not forgetting the special FF party on the first Friday of each month. The annual Mr Hoist contest always sees The Hoist at its busiest.

The Music
Usually a sleazy, sexy blend of house and tribal, although there’s no dancefloor and no-one here actually dances.

The Drink
The Hoist prides itself on stocking a wide selection of beers and spirits. Four beers including bitter and cider are available on draught, with 21 other beer brands in bottles and cans including San Miguel and Becks. International visitors will be pleased to know that American standard bar service applies, which means some of the most courteous and attentive bar staff on the scene, as well as details like lots of ice if you want it and free re-fills with your mixer. Also the bar staff are good eye candy and usually wear tight shorts or heavy leather gear, so you might want to tip.

The Last Word
An imacculate venue, excellent staff and an international reputation make The Hoist a must-visit for fetish fans.
