I am feeling slightly smug that this is my local ... but nothing compares to having a lazy Sunday hangover session at the Old Queens Head.I know what I am going to get each time I come - a Queens Roast (beef / chicken & lamb on a plate!!!) washed down with a Cosmopolitan.Beautiful. Content …and always stuffed!!My other half was impressed as they bring out plates of free Yorkies and hand them out. Free yorkies and gravy. Winner.Apparently there is free karaoke on Sundays, I haven't tried it this scares the life out of me and I would need a whole bottle of Café Petron before entering. Thankfully work on Monday forbids this, but I saw a lot of people leaving the karaoke room wearing glittery hats - looking like they had had a proper Sunday celebration.Jenga is more of my Sunday game plan, it's just making sure we arrive before someone else grabs it!
I'm not big on pub quizzes, however I got roped into being a part of my mates team.I had my doubts - and didn't really want to go head to head with a bunch of academics, especially after a long day at work - as to be honest I just wanted a pint!To my surprise the guy who used to be in Coronation Street as Spider (if anyone recalls!?!) was the quiz master. We were all given 'toys' such as bottles of bubbles, kazoos, balloons and ping pong balls …. so my curiosity got the better of me as I was about to bail out and go home. This was definitely NOT your average quiz - as it was all based around games where each group sends up a challenger to blow the largest bubble or kazoo along to a round of tunes.I was particularly won over by this as I got to prove my underrated front man skills to Meat Loaf. Let's just say there was some power lunges going down. One of competitors climbed on to a table to prove his worthiness - but my stage prowess won the crowd and I won a prize. At least I can tick that off my bucket list as complete: Kazoo Meatloaf showdown. Done.Basically I would really recommend this, as it was so much fun and brought a whole pub full of people together for a couple of hours of silliness.I was also a champion as I had won my team a round of free shots … so all in all, a successful Tuesday which was a break from the normal bus home for a curry and a DVD.We didn't win .. but we will be back to try again … watch this space OQH
THIS PUB HAS A SECRET KARAOKE ROOM!!!!Who new, that on the top floor of this pub was a very kitsch little karaoke room.I am not a massive fan of karaoke - but this was so much fun.Not every pub lets in hen party groups - but this place was perfect as it was just the right size. They were also very welcoming to us and we have a free guest list into the pub.It was also so much cheaper than going to the Soho, plus we didn't have to leave the venue to find a place to go dancing after. To be honest it was the smaller touches that tickled me, as there was a dressing up box with wigs and hats. The inflatable guitars we the best and everyone let loose their inner rock star.I work in media, and it's always a bonus to come across a really quirky, fun gem of a place that doesn't break the bank.I will be back with my colleagues for a team night out, as it truly was hilarious!
I came here a couple of days ago for the first time with a few friends and we had a great time.
The atmosphere and music were spot on and the bar service was super fast and friendly.
We stayed all night and left really happy and will definitely be back soon!
I am a regular to this pub, and the reason being is that you have a top night - there is always good music and people having a good time on the dance floor.
To be honest - most of the venues in Angel charge entry fee on a Friday & Saturday night. I would rather pay £4 to have a great night in a happening venue then pay £4 to get in to a soulless vibe less place.
I will look forward to my next evening out at The Queens.
Went on Saturday at 10.30pm. Queued for 40 minutes to get in, in the cold. Would have given up but friends were inside. Then it was a 20 minute queue to put coats away. 20 minutes to get a drink at the bar. And it was very crowded, couldn't move. I hated it. Never going back. Overpriced pub - £4 to get in, complete rip off.
Can always count on a good night in this place. A mismatch of Shoreditch trend setters and your normal 'have a good time' Islington local keeps the place from being too try hard or pretentious. Bar staff are always friendly and attentive and there is always something good to listen to upstairs at the weekend. After work drinks here can always end up rather messy after the best intentions, also reasonably priced. Very popular for a reason.
I saw Carl Barrat play at the Queens head recently. He is one of my all time hero's, and I have travelled all over to see him play.
I can't believe I managed to see him at one of my local pubs. I have to say a massive thanks to the Queens Head for getting him on the bill. He was brilliant - the gig was packed and there was a great atmosphere.
It just goes to show that your venue is one of the key places to go for intimate gigs without having to travel too far and pay big bucks.
Please bring Carl Barrat back!
Cheers, Ed
Had such a fun night here on Friday. I've been a couple of times for music but not at the weekend.
I had to pick a venue for a work leaving do, so many different people to please i thought it was going to be a nightmare, it normally is! I called ahead and they were really helpful and nice. They booked us a little area, aranged for some drinks to be ready for us when we arrived (loved the cocktail jugs) and then everyone was free to order food if they wanted to. The older peeps stayed downstairs and later on the place ended up being packed out and us dancing the lights came on.
Came down to The Old Queen's Head for Jamie Woon, Sound of Rum and Rob Da Bank last night and it was the best Tuesday night I've had in ages! Great music, great crowd vibe upstairs... will definitely be checking the website out for future line-ups.x
If you're the sort of sort of knuckle-dragging neanderthal who only ever wears Ben Sherman shirts and only ever drinks cheap lager, then this is definitely the place for you. Otherwise, steer well-clear (unless you enjoy being treated like an inconvenience by some of the surliest and most unpleasant bouncers I've ever has the misfortune to walk past (after paying 4 quid to get in at 8pm on a Saturday night!!)).
I can safely say that New years day here was Awesome! My friends and I came down for Bugged Out - which was an all day party. It was mental - but really good fun. This pub had great vibes & a real mix of music. I met some cool people too. I have always paid lots of money on entrance fee's for New Years day parties - but this was free which was a total bonus to my purse strings ;-)
I didn't realise how many good DJ's play here. I will deffo be keeping my eye on what's going on in this happening London pub!
I had friends down for my birthday and was recommended the old queens. What we found nice was that we could chill out down stairs but then dance away upstairs. The staff were really friendly and quite efficient. We were planning on only having a few here but ended up staying all night. We also got the added bonus of having are pic with Howard marks. great night.
Nice surprise. Just moved to essex road and this was the first local a stumbled on. Turned out to be pretty decent and by 8pm it was rammed and by far the best place around islington. Pretty original decor as well. So thumbs up from me.
An excellent line up of DJ's is what you expect from the Queens and you're rarely ever disappointed. Was here on Friday last for a birthday, thought I'd have a pint and a nibble and leave, but ended up staying late. Great set by DJ Vadim (he's the best)!! Will be back for more..
I just moved to London and was recommended the Old Queens Head by a friend. We had a great time and enjoyed great food and great service!
came to the pub quiz last tuesday, loads of fun. was a bit more upbeat than i expected but went down really well with my colleagues. definately one for the christmas do.
Don't reserve an area here. I reserved an area upstairs for my birthday and had to pay for £200 of drinks in advance. They left the drinks on the table but made us queue at the bar to get the bottles of beer open. They also told me to arrive for 7pm and when I got there was told they wouldn't open upstairs until 8pm but I could buy drinks downstairs until then.
In addition they wouldn't let friends who came out for my birthday in without queuing for ages despite our reserved area being empty.
I'm sure it's a nice pub but don't ever reserve an area as it is a complete rip off.
Went to Queens on Tuesday and stumbled across their pub Quiz hosted by a rather funny chap. Thought it was a good laugh and some of the rounds were pretty good. An enjoyable evening in a nice place in Islington. I think I'll be going to the quiz next week.
Be aware that the people who run this bar also run The Westbury in Kilburn and The Paradise in Kensal Rise. That they plant reviews in here from people praising all 3 is somewhat hilarious and also a bit sinister. What should a review site other than somewhere that people can see what other people think? Not for this lot though, let's patronise you a but eh? Silly Charlie indeed.
I came here on Friday night with some friends and had a fantastic time. The staff were helpful and quick to serve us, despite it being a busy night. The decor of the place was really artistic which suited the Islington/Angel area we were in, and we all loved the atmosphere at the venue. Fantastic ambiance, fantastic drinks, fantastic night out! I'll be going back soon. Thank you Old Queen's Head!

I visited The Old Queens Head last weekend and had a great time, a group of friends met there after work at about 5pm and didn't plan on staying all night (as we had plans to go into Dalston) shockingly we stumbled out at 2am having had a wicked evening dancing to Mat Horne DJ! Anyway- would recommend anytime but is actually a great night on a Friday (much to my surprise).
Came in to watch a friends band in the gorgeous room upstairs here - definitely much more special than your average band night venue, it is exquisitely decorated! Had some great cocktails from a lovely Kiwi barman, and enjoyed the music. Will be back for more!
My best friend was leaving town; because of a boy. Angry and upset though I was, it dawned on me that I should throw her a leaving do so marvellous that she would not want to leave. So I picked up the phone and called the Old Queens Head. I got through to a happy cheery voice to who I ranted about my unfortunate friend and her new husband and why leaving London was such a mistake. And so I explained to her my devious plan. We needed an area for about twenty of us, near the fireplace and had to have some cocktails and canapés. The booking process was smooth and effortless. The bookings manager said she would ensure that the night was my friends best ever.
And so it was. We were made to feel special. As we entered the venue, we were shown our areas. There was champagne waiting for us and glasses lay out neatly. The tea lights all around added to the quirky yet pretty decor and the atmosphere was just right. The music was at the right level and though we could get up from those comfy sofas and sway whenever we wanted, we could also talk at a comfortable tone (OK sometimes it got a bit loud). The canapés arrived at the right time, lush and absolutely delicious and the cocktails were perfect. And what about my friend? Well, she still decided to leave, but before going she did say that the night was perfect and she couldn’t have wished for anything better. I also know this wouldn’t have been possible without the efficient planning and help from everyone at the Old Queens Head. Thank you guys!
Amazing Pub! I had been looking for somewhere in Islington to go for a Sunday Roast and had a few poor experiences elsewhere - but the Roasts here were unbelievable! Caught some bands upstairs too for free which topped the whole thing off!
popped in on Sunday and was pleasantly surprised by this bar in Islington. Had a delicious lamb roast and the rest of my group loved their food too. it's nice to find a pub that serves decent homemade food for once. favourite part of the day was to find out that there was live music on upstairs, so we of course stayed for longer and carried on drinking!
A brilliant bar in Islington, The Old Queens Head is always churning out something better, something new, something fantastic. I was here last Saturday for some drinks with my friends and - I can't say this enough - was blown away by the vibe, the music and the gorgeous people in the bar. Mr. Thing had a DJ set that evening & his tunes had us partying all night.
My only regret was that I hadn't booked an area earlier. A lot of the cosy areas in the bar were all booked up- motivation for me to get to it earlier next time! Anyhow, we had a fantastic time - the cocktails were fabulous, my girlfriend loved the flirtini and I couldn't get enough of the sloe gin fizz and the bar staff were top class. The Old Queens Head is undoubtedly one of the best bars in London and we will definitely be coming back again.
Fantastic pub quiz on Tuesdays!
Funny 'silly' competitions in between the rounds, we won shots for our team!
The guy who holds it is really engaging and it's a great night, even though we haven't won the jackpot yet.

I was not really looking forward to my 30th, till a friend threw a surprise bash for me at the Old Queens Head last weekend. What started as a quiet and low key affair turned out to be a blast! A fabulous party venue in north London, the Queens Head lives up to it reputation as one of the best live music venues in London. And what amazing timing! Snow Patrol were launching their new album too! We sat initially in the Fireplace area downstairs, nibbled on some lamb koftas and homemade pork pies (absolutely gorgeous btw) and later moved upstairs to the dancing area. Popular as it is, the place tends to get busy quite early on, but that didn't stop us from having the great time that we did. The music was brilliant, the venue, stunning and service on that particularly busy day was impeccable. I had one of the best birthdays ever and will recommend to anyone who loves great music & good food.
This is my fave place to chill out on a Sunday. Smashing roasts, massive bloody marys and cool, friendly staff. Live music upstairs and board games downstairs mean you will never be bored. To be honest I have never built up the energy to dance but there is a good sofa corner which is EXCELLENT for slinking into and taking it all in!
good fun down to earth SUPER PUB! went down to join in the new quiz and was blown away! not your average pub quiz at all!
lots of games and free shots to loosen you up...people were actually dancing on tables to Madonna's vogue at one point.
we had such a good time and met some new friends too. really nice interactive fun, amazing burgers too!would recommend this pub for sure.
Love this place. Great Bloody Mary cocktails - I think she actually put sherry in mine along with the vodka. Pure class!
Popped in a couple of months ago for a quiet drink downstairs which was lovely, managed to get a sofa, the last time I was there (about 2 years ago) we were upstairs for the club bit and as far as I'm aware (or can remember!) that was pretty nice too.
great place, I'm rarely up North London way but when I am and I need a bev I always try to persuade people to go there.
The Old Queens Head is one of the best places to go out in north London by a long way.
Great atmosphere, nice food, great DJ definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet pint or a good night out
The Queens Head is the best
Great Atomsphere,
Great Food and Great Music. I recommend it, I will be back again and again.
Old Head Queen’s is definitely the best kept-secret for booze in North London!!! The atmosphere is just great and music is the top of the tops for partying. Really recommend it...Louis (London)
A half empty venue ( I later found) on a saturday night, yet two guys get turned away because it's "mixed groups only".
To make it worse, there was a group of girls behind us (obviously that's not mixed either) but lo! that's fine.
So by "mixed" they mean "not guys-only". Wtf!? I though that crap was what happened in crap-house late-license bars in the 'burbs, along with "no trainers" and "no jeans".
Blatant sexism of the highest degree. If you think two guys is somehow an excusable reason, I witnessed an extremely smartly dressed guy, alone, walking up (there was also no queue) being turned away for the same reason.
What the hell is wrong with this place!!! Are they stuck in 1990?The two people minding the 'guest list' near the door also bitched feverishly to each other about other women standing nearby smoking or in the queue.
This pub has got it sorted out. Great range of drinks, a good simple menu and comfy old school feel. Did I mention a solid line up of DJs and bands each week. Only issue is so many people like it so it can get rammed. Best in this area.
WOW! I went down the Old Queens Head on New Years Day for Bugged Out Alldayer and had the time of my life. It had to be one of the best atmospheres I've ever experienced. The music was brilliant and the people even better. They had both Erol Alkan and Mylo as secret special guest dj's, how good's that, and in a pub! I can't wait for the next one at easter, gonna be BIG! Thank you Old Queens Head for starting my year with a bang.
I went to The Old Queens Head for Sunday lunch yesterday with a few friends and I have to say it's the best one I've had out in quite sometime!
Great food, great atmosphere, friendly staff. What a cracking pub!
