One of the best-kept secrets in the West End. Friendly, un-pretentious staff, a stylish mid to late 20s crowd and good music.

I'm always amazed that they're not busier because I've always managed to get a table and the service and quality of drinks is amazing.

I have been going to The Player now for a good number of years. I have hosted and been to many a good birthday bash there, know the bar staff well and the cocktail menu! However, the management of the bar has recently changed and I have to say I have never met a more unprofessional manager as I did last weekend.

The rudeness of this man knows no bounds. He made my party of extremely professional people feel patronised and very angry and we will no longer be going there for social events.

Hopefully once this idiot goes The Player will return to normality and become the friendly, welcoming bar it always was. Avoid it at all costs as there are much better bars around the corner that aren't run so appallingly.

Just as an addendum to my review of The Player below - I wrote to the Player management to complain after the poor service I received. I'm pleased to say they responded quickly with a very considered apology and say they've spoken to the staff accordingly. So while the service on the night was poor, I'm pleased that my complaint was taken seriously and dealt with well.

Lovely bar, nice chilled out ambience, and great cocktails. And we even got seats on a Saturday night. I would say it's a fantastic find but for one thing: it's a shame that the waitress chose to ignore me all night, and spoke only to the two men I was with. She was astonishingly rude to me and apparently for no other reason than I was female as her terrible attitude was clear from the minute I sat down.

She spoke at length to my male friends and couldn't have been more helpful as they chose what cocktail to choose next. She spent a good 5 minutes with them, crouching down beside them flirtatiously and describing the various drinks. Once they decided - she walked off, without taking my order!

When I tried to call her back to place my order, she pretended to be deaf, only returning when my boyfriend called after her. And this happened at least three times. The only time I could get served is if my boyfriend spoke on my behalf! I've never experienced anything quite like it.

It's a complete shame because if it hadn't been for that stunningly rude woman I might have considered membership, so taken was I with the bar and its impressive cocktail menu. But there's nothing like good service...and that was nothing like good service.
