An unpretentious and welcoming pub, The Roebuck feels like it’s in the middle of nowhere but after a couple of pints you’ll begin to see why so many people have braved the six or seven minute walk towards Tower Bridge Road from Borough tube station

The Venue
Neither overly smart not tatty either, this corner pub boasts a large U-shaped bar, which you can either sit up at or take your chances with the strangely ad hoc collection of pub furniture. There’s a Victorian function room available for hire upstairs too, and a few benches outside for smokers.

The Atmosphere
A local crowd ranging from 25-45 years in the main, although you may even see at least one couple in their seventies thoroughly enjoying themselves. That said, most of the groups consist of either men or women, not both. And it’s loud. There’s a soundtrack - 80s funk like Grace Jones - but the sound of heated conversation often overpowers it. Relatively rowdy, certainly, but still civilized enough for a group of three women to stay engrossed in their game of Trivial Pursuit. The staff are plentiful and personable and the punters polite, enough even after a few drinks.

The Food
There’s a roast on a Sunday lunchtime, which offers beef, chicken or a veggie option for under a tenner, and their burgers are particularly good. At the weekend, a magical hangover cure in the shape of a full English brekkie can be yours for £5 (until 2pm).

The Drink
A decent if not huge array of drinks, from well known lagers like Amstel, Peroni and Sagres, and although there’s only a couple of ales on offer, a pint of the dark amber Ubu (£3.45) is so good that its sure to be repeated. Meantime beers and specialist bottles from around the world also feature.

The Last Word
Nothing fancy, but good beer, nice people and an unpretentious, down-to-earth atmosphere all combine to make this quite a find.
