I have only been here once and that was enough for me, we went to watch some 6 nation games up on the first floor.
there was hardly any seating just a couple of small tables and one table for 8 infront of a very low projector screen which ment everyone was just sitting on the pool tables or the floor, it looked liked a airport with 20 cancelled planes,
the picture on the projector screen was all wonky and such bad quality i wasnt sure who was who,
the beer was expensive and the bar staff was more worried about messing about than serving anybody
there are much better places in london so i wont be coming back
A horrendous place. I went there to watch a Premiership football match and had to pay £5 to get in. When I asked why they said it was because they had a number of matches that night. A Sports cafe showing numerous matches. That was big of them.
The beer is overpriced, (over £4 a bottle - unless you buy a gallon you get reduced rate) There is a lack of cheap plastic seats and the place stank of rotten chickens wings covered in liquidized crap. If you enjoy watching sport while standing up while having a background of crap music this is the place for you. This place is just a cash cow for the owners. Truely an embarassment.
Let 8 of us down by not showing Inter vs Trabzonspor champions league game. We turned up and was told that the game was not showing because of a Euro Basketball game happening at the same time.
The conversation at the door went exactly like this:
Me - “Hi, are you showing the Inter game?”
Doorman “Who are they playing?”
Me “The Turkish team Trabzo-“
Doorman “No”
2 large screens and over 70 plasmas? All we wanted was one screen. We don’t want your kind was the message I guess. Thank you very much Sports Cafe. You let us down big time. Trabzonspor went on to beat Inter 1-0 and we missed it.
I hate you Sports Cafe.
I've only been here once and it was for a private event, so this review may be a little biased as there were loads of bar staff catering for about 120 people. The drinks service was quick, the staff were polite and kept the place clean. The food was good and reasonably priced (although for the event that I was at - The Badger GP meet-up, the food prices were specially reduced). I ntoiced it was very busy downstairs, but it keeps bringing people in and is always busy, so obviously, its not bad, otherwise it would have closed down ages ago. Would reccomend this for sports related events though, like the Badger GP F1 meet-up.
Stopped off for spot of lunch and football with a couple of friends on a saturday afternoon and was not happy.
Have been there before to drink and watch the sport (surprise surprise), which wasn't too bad.
Yes, the drinks are pricey and the place gets pretty packed with tourists but I was really underwhelmed by the restaurant and service. The staff couldn't be bothered to check on us and when I went to the bar to get my own drinks, they berated me. DO YOUR JOB THEN!! Service was slow and i don't care how full the place is, serve me, take my money or I walk.
On the plus side, the food was acceptable...real chips, yum! The booths had individual screens and it was reasonably comfortable.
Next time, drinks only. And even then, many other better bars nearby!!
The only two things this place has going for it is its location and the many TV screens inside. But actually, you only watch one screen at a time so it doesn't really matter if there's a gazillion, and there's many other pubs and bars in the area that show live sports too.
This place is an absolute rip-off for drinks and food, and is always so jammed packed with tourists that its impossible to enjoy a game. The worst bit is the service; you expect maybe a few rude waiting and bar staff, but the managers, especially the assistant manager, just ignored us and laughed when we enquired why our food and drinks were so slow.
Clearly the management think that they have so much business due to their location that they don't have to bother with customer service. I for one will not be patronising this place again.
Went to watch semi-final of T20 world cup, one barman working cricket not on in downstairs bar, apart from deserted dining area which had it on one screen. subsequently kicked out of deserted dining room by waitress with attitude so we could make way for diners!! Barman charged my mate £20.20 for 4 pints!! (whoops he accidentally made a mistake and charge for 5 pints). Becks Vier was flat, Brains was only bitter. Probably the worst sports bar in the world, avoid this expensive bar with its lazy unhelpful bar staff.
if im stucked at The Cloak room beacuse of THE Castle girl,i think the pub was great, and p.s- not for yanks
Inexperienced bar staff - Took around half an hour to be served at the bar - The place was packed and there were only two behind the bar dropping glasses, giving people the wrong change, forgetting who ordered what etc. Other staff (e. G at the front entrance) have no idea what screens are showing specific games and don't want to be of any help to you. Badly stocked bar - most beers on tap had run out, even though it was the most basic selection to start with. (and you pay over £4 for a pint).
Faulty Screens / Sport Footage Unreliable - The game that I went to watch, which was well advertised on their website, cut out just ten minutes into the second half and no attempt was made to remedy the problem. They then switched off another game that others were watching for reasons only known to themselves.
Very Unclean - Dirty glasses. The bar itself was dirty and sticky with no attempt by the staff to clean the mess. Annoying Commentary - Whatever sport / game you gone to watch there is a 'resident commentator' who shouts over an over loud P. A inane, irrelevant comments on whatever game he is obviously most interested in. The main reason you would go to The Sports Cafe would be to watch a sporting event of your choice, and even if they have well advertised that they are showing certain events, they cannot be relied on. So, there is a chance that what you have paid to go in and watch might not be shown anyway. Pointless bar.
Went there today to watch the tennis finals and only 1 waitress seemed to have the "schedule".
We were told the game would start at 5:30, but they had no idea which screen it would be on. They didn't start showing the game until 6:15. The food is AWFUL!!!! and EXPENSIVE!!!
We had an actual dinner for cheaper at Texas Embassy and even Thai Square which are nearby. It took forever to clear tables and it was sooo hot.
The card machines weren't working so my husband had to go up and down to find a card machine that worked.
This place is a joke and should be shut down immediately! There was an "American" platter on the menu.
I think the owners of this place should actually go to America first to see what a real platter should consist of and maybe learn how a real sports bar should be!
ha! Sports Cafe.. dont waste your time or money go down the street to Tiger Tiger its more crowded but a much better experience
this place is DISGUSTING !!!!!!!! as i stood at the bar there were several flies flying about how disgusting
the cups were so dirty i also noticed the bar staff just washing the cups in cold water NO SOAP!
the food was disgusting the chicken wings smelt bad and were very pink when i got down to the bone they tasted like they had been fried over 100 times so DRY !
no wonder they cover them up with that disgusting sour poor excuse for BBQ sauce .. I WANTED TO GIVE 0 STARS !! and yes who is that moron during the match they need to shut him up !!
This must be one of the worst places on earth to watch live sports.....
The drinks are expensive, the choice is bad, the food is bland, the screens and seating are not well thought out and worst of all they charge an entrance fee (in exchange for a warm beer) for the bigger games....
There are thousands of places around London where watching live sports is an absolute experience, but at the Sports Cafe its an absolute pain...Never ever again
Where to start... Went to this bar to watch the champions league final last night. Never again.
First off you have to pay £5 to get in, fair enough I guess as you do get a 'free' bottle of Carlsberg thrown in with it.
Once inside, there's a good choice of screens but there wasn't a single spare seat, at 5pm, 3 hours before kick off.
They rammed the place so full it was borderline dangerous!
Like being on a packed, sweaty terrace, except rather than soak up the pre match atmosphere you get to listen to cheesy student music cranked up to 100 decibels (the guy in front was measuring on his iphone!).
If I wanted to 'jump around' to house of pain I'd go to a club! Why they needed a DJ I have no idea.
Instead they wait until 5 mins before kick off to put the commentary on so you get no build up.
The big screen isn't very big, is way too low and has a rubbish picture.
Just when you think things can't get any worse, some moron with a microphone, thinking he's Gary Lineker/Pete Tong, decides to try and 'work the crowd' and give us all his insightful views on the game..."come on united" - genius.
He also butts in during the match to tell us about the offers going on in the bar (it's worse than ITV's 'Tic Tac' incident), with 10 minutes left in the game he decides to tell us all about the confederations cup coming up, utter nonsense, I wouldn't even watch that at home, let alone in that sweat pit.
The toilet situation is a joke, there are 2 small urinals, and some brain box decided it would be good to locate them upstairs, so it took about 10 minutes to get there and about another 10 to queue.
Of course, being as this place thinks it's a club, there's your token guy selling an array of cheap aftershave just to slow the queue down even more.
Food, awful (and cold). Drinks, expensive. I'm sure this place would be ok for smaller games
Cant think of anywhere better to go with some mates on a saturday afternoon and watch the football, (or any other sport) you're surrounded by plasma screens showing a variety of games and the sky sports soccer saturday show.
Great arrangement of seating means youll always get a seat to watch the game you want, good food and reasonably priced beer. Love the formula one car hanging from the roof!
Yes men outnumber women 5 to 1 or more, but you go here to watch the sport, not to pull!
Will definately go back
Oh Dear, a few friends and I went here to watch some football, bloody awful. Avoid at all cost.
totally enjoyed my visit to this venue.
i visited over the weekend of the european championship final.very busy with a great atmosphere.never had to wait too long to get served at the bar.
can't wait until my next visit there.
garry
Is there a way to give zero stars, or negative stars, or black holes? The Sports Cafe is AWFUL. I went there to watch NFL football and they lied to me, telling me the game would be on and then making me stand around for a half hour before telling me, without explanation, that they wouldn't be showing the game at all. The food is terrible and unbelievably expensive -- think Gordon Ramsay prices for a half-dozen terribly cooked wings. The place has all the awful bling of an American sports bar with none of the good qualities (i.e. cheap food, good beer, nice staff that is intelligent enough to communicate with you when you ask basic questions). It is NO COINCIDENCE that this place gets panned on every review site. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!!!!!
the worst place to be i hope the boss go there and see what is going on there.
I have been to the Sports Cafe on a Tuesday and my and my friends' first impression was a little bit like this: oh, yeah, many men, looks a little bit dirty but lets see. And, after half an hour, it was like this: Wow, very very cute English men, quite crazy atmosphere and music that was okay. And you get a beer for £1. Have a look!
I've visited Sports Cafe on different occassions, watching football and drinking on Saturday evenings. It is very difficult to find seats for both occassions unless you are dining or going there before 7pm. The decor is simple and American themed. Most of the time they have large groups of people (i.e. American students and tours) packing the place after 10pm.
The music is very generic from RnB to old skool. The dance floor is quite spacious downstairs but basic. However, if you are after a simple and not glamourous Saturday night then Sports Cafe is your place. Drinks are okay priced.
I think the music should start earlier and the sexy boys shouldn't arrive too late. Another problem is the cloakroom organisation, which is just awful. I've never seen before such messing around if you want to get your coat and bag. However, Sports Cafe has great decoration, atmosphere and music. Not to forget the crazy dancing competitions.
Just to get an idea of what Sports Cafe is like, go there on Monday for a cheap night out and meet some different people.
Sports Cafe has cheap drinks (and not the good kind), and dirty boys. Go there if you want to be groped. It is also extremely smoke filled. Do not go to Sports Cafe.
I often go to Sports Cafe, as I think the themed nights they do are brilliant, especially the Wings on a Thursday. It is a great place to watch sport, they show all major events, and enjoy a pint. Then after the coverage the DJ and music provides addded entertainment at Sports Cafe.
Avoid Sport Cafe like the plague. They should remove the word 'sports' from their name because sports lovers do not want ear-splitting music and a DJ during the broadcasts. Is it too much to ask to be able to hear the person next to you? The drinks are overpriced and they give you change on a plate as if we tip bar staff in England.
I found the Sports Cafe staff thick and the venue had an uncomfortable vibe, full of yobs who forgivably thought it was just another chav bar. Going to a sports bar on holiday in America is a great experience. This was dreadful.
Sports Cafe was just awful. Never go there, it ruined my day.
A nice meal at the Sports Cafe, but it was pricey and the biggest curse was that the place is smoke infested. Move with the times Sports Cafe.
I got dragged along to Sports Cafe for the Chelsea-Liverpool game, and have to agree with the guy below - what an awful place.
There was a DJ, an annoying DJ who was like someone on the radio or a crappy nightclub (he was playing music like Oasis and talking about the football). I would have liked him to shut up and to listen to the actual football build-up on the TV. But no, he carried on until the very second they kicked off.
There were five TVs near me at the Sports Cafe, but only one with Chelsea on, despite it being the main sporting event. Three TVs were showing some other game that nobody was watching. But would they change the channel? No.
The atmosphere at Sports Cafe wasn't that great - the bar was slow and overpriced and the place is smokey and tacky. There are a thousand better places in London to watch football than the Sports Cafe. Avoid!
I give Sports Cafe five out of five!
I love the Sports Cafe. I was recommended this place and I have never had such a good night. Sports Cafe is great value. I love it.
The Sports Cafe is great.
The floor was sticky and the toilets didn't taste nice...poor experience at The Sports Cafe.
The Sports Cafe does not deserve its reputation. I went here with friends last night to see the Lions game and all of us came away determined not to go back. It took an age to get served drinks before the game because for some reason only one of the two bars on the first floor was serving despite the place being rammed. We were unable to order food as the staff could not deal with the orders they already had. Some people who had ordered food before us were not served until the second half of the game. Not only that, there was no pre-match atmosphere in Sports Cafe as the venue would not switch the commentary on until just before the game. To add insult to injury the bar staff even messed up our drinks tab when we tried to pay and were surly and uncooperative throughout. I'd hate to see how this place would cope with a genuinely big sporting event. Even a Monday night rugby game attracted a decent crowd and it went into meltdown. Avoid Sports Cafe like the plague.
The food at The Sports Cafe is actually surprisingly good. I particularly like the burgers and the ribs.
The Sports Cafe's a great place to chill out with mates.
Your best bet is to go to the Sports Cafe on a Monday night and get the one pound drinks. The main reason anyone else goes here is to watch sport. They have all the sport you can imagine on Sky - not that you can hear it because the music is so loud. Sports Cafe is also full of American tourists so that adds to the noise.
