The ViewLondon Review

Review byEdward Mellett29/11/2007
If you want to show off at latest late night celebrity hangout then indulge at The Wardour. It’s pompous, pretentious and decadent; undeniably Stringfellows.

The Venue
The Wardour is situated at the very top of Wardour Street, close to Oxford Street. The chic black/gold exterior is relatively compact, but exaggerated by theatrical railings placed on the pavement to separate smokers from people in the queue. Through large glass windows passersby can see the packed, buzzy atmosphere inside - a surprisingly cosy space offering a total capacity of 600 clubbers and diners. The club features a decadently decorated restaurant, which serves dinner from 9pm, and two floors of drinking and dancing complete with space for well trained pole dancers. Posers will be pleased to know that the club offers not only a VIP area, but a VVIP section too!

The Atmosphere
Although The Wardour describes itself as a private members club with an invite only guestlist, this is a little exaggerated. A simple phone call will get you an invite. The club gives the impression of trying too hard to impress. For instance, 350,000 crystals were flown in from Italy to adorn the club. The Wardour also boasts about every celeb who’s stepped foot on the premises (most notably Tom Jones, Kid Rock, Lily Allen, Rihanna and the England football team) in an attempt to convince the general public that they are the kind of place where cool people hang out. From outside, The Wardour seems cliquey and inclusive. Expect to see a gaggle of models chain smoke cigarettes as you queue up. When you get to the front of the queue, you'll be met by an aloof, styled doorman who decides whether or not to let you in. Inside, things are busy, sweaty and competitive. Everyone checks each other out, if only to make disparaging remarks to their friends about the outfit they’re in. Getting a drink is like giving a catwalk performance, the pressure to impress is palpable.

Mondays to Fridays sees Angels at The Wardour, where Stringfellows' hottest girls seductively dance the night away. Weekends, however, it's all about the clubbing, but don't be surprised to also see girls dancing on podiums semi-clad.

The Music
The music here is a good mix of funky house, hip hop and decent chart music. It’s not cutting edge, but completely passable for a Saturday night. Furthermore, the strippers on the podium wouldn’t be able to dance to outlandish techno, so the choice of slower funky music is probably a wise one!

The Drink
There is a wonderful bar with plenty to chose from, including outlandish cocktails, a decent wine list and conventional bar drinks; everything magnificently served and magnificently overpriced. A couple of double mixers will set you back well over £20 and as for wine, the mark up is huge. There is no real reason why the prices are so high here, apart from the fact the clientele can afford it.

The Last Word
Catch a glimpse of celebrities and sip champagne whilst watching erotic strip tease in a thriving, buzzing environment. But watch out for your wallet!
