The ViewLondon Review
Jostling for recognition in the ruthless establishment jungle of Hoxton Square, Trafik enters into the fray armed with neon signs, comfort and cocktails, all of which keep its reputation way up off the jungle floor (although you might end up there yourself).
The Venue
Despite its Old Street address, Trafik can be tricky to spot if you approach it from the West. However, its glowing signs at both the front and back entrances provide unmistakable beacons to even the most blurry-eyed of pavement stumblers.
Inside, you’re greeted by swathes of brown; the leather couches and armchairs, the wooden floors and tables, and the rugs on the wall. Whilst hardly original, it’s a common formula because it works. There’s nothing worse than getting your hands on a pint or your favourite cocktail and having to perch precariously on a stone stool next to a lime green wall without a ledge in sight. But you’ll have no such trouble here. This is quite possibly one of the comfiest bars in London; if you manage to secure seat, of course.
The Atmosphere
In keeping with the slightly generic but nonetheless successful decor, mood lighting and Warhol-esque canvases complete the cosy, trendy and relaxing atmosphere. Trafik ticks every box without trying too hard. Every bar in Hoxton would like to be described as cool, but there’s nothing cooler than achieving success with seemingly no effort. The staff are relaxed and informed, and the music eclectic.
The Drink
The absence of a drink menu at trafik serves as proof of the bar staff’s extensive knowledge and mixing abilities, and if you’re unsure they’ll guide you through. Their two draught beers are excellent and rarely found in such a prominent position, whilst their selection of bottles is selective and tasteful, completing a near-perfect alcoholic set list. A mouthwateringly generous Happy Hour will allow you to sample most of it.
The Last Word
A sensibly priced and well-stocked bar, helpful staff, comfy chairs, appropriate music, a downstairs dancefloor and no entrance fees mean you’re unlikely to be left wanting anything more from Trafik, except to be stuck in its jam until 2am.
