The ViewLondon Review

Deep in the darkest parts of East London is a club that plays on the old skool warehouse rave scene and is as grimy as it is cool.

The Venue
Unless you know the area, Unit 7 can be a little tricky to find. There are no signs, staying true to its rave roots. You have to just guess that it’s at the end of the big entrance to the warehouse estate.

Upon entering, you’re met with a large cloakroom lined with comfy sofas. This is also used as a chill out room later in the night as an escape from the pumping tunes.

In the main room of Unit 7 is a long bench where tired ravers can sit down and just chill for a bit. There are also various leather sofas scattered around with tables. Opposite the seating area is a DJ booth on a raised platform with two big fans either side, which do a good job of cooling things down. There’s a small bar at the back that serves drinks in plastic cups poured from bottles. On the wall is a lava lamp style projector that mesmerises ravers. There’s also a glow of red that emanates from the bottom of black pillars placed in the middle of the room, giving the club a dark, moody feel.

The Atmosphere
The atmosphere at Unit 7 is electrifying whilst maintaining an air of fun. It feels like you’ve gone to a secret warehouse party and you’re part of the old 90s scene. It gets rammed from about 2am so get there a little earlier to guarantee entry.

The only downside are the painfully trendy Shoreditch types that dominate the place – expect a plethora of artsy guys and gals wearing large plastic glasses, leather jackets, and tight coloured jeans, with scruffy unkempt hair. That said, the feeling here isn’t exclusive if you’re not like that.

The Music
The music at Unit 7, as with most clubs, is dependent on the night you visit. On Fridays they have a night called The Bicycle Club, which plays minimal techno and trendy dance music. On Saturdays - when it’s typically busier – you can expect techno. Also, once a month on a Saturday, there’s an event called ‘Zombie’s Ate My Brain’ where everyone dresses up as zombies and dances to the sounds of minimal techno. Other nights have famous DJs such as Skull Juice for the Neon Noise Project event. All the nights that are put on here are streets ahead of other clubs and the patrons know and appreciate it.

The Drink
Clubbers come to venues like this to dance and socialise, not necessarily to drink. Beer is £3.50 and comes out of a bottle, which is poured into a plastic cup. A shot is £3.50, spirit and mixer £4.50, a double spirit mixer is £7, and a double shot is £6. Wine is £3.50 a glass and a bottle is £12. They also have a delightful energy drink called Pussy for £2.50, which goes down a treat with the revellers.

The Last Word
Unit 7 is definitely a ravers paradise, and with the lush surroundings and props it’s an awesome place to go if you want to dance the night away until the early hours.
