Up the Creek pulls in the punters and comics from far and wide. They put on a ruddy good show every weekend so just take the plunge and head along - it’s doubtful you’ll be disappointed.

The Venue
Located opposite Cutty Sark DLR station, Up the Creek couldn’t be easier to find, with plenty of free parking available right outside the venue. As you arrive, prepare to be searched and have your ID checked. The security is quite tight, although not unfriendly.

Once inside, you’ll find a main room complete with a stage, DJ, and enough seating for 290 people. Its split into two sections – one positioned around the stage where the braver people sit, and a larger section at the back with longer, wider rows (a safer distance from the Micky-taking comic!). There’s a gap between the two that serves as a walkway to get to the bar, toilets and dining room upstairs. As you can imagine, the decor is plain and simple aside from the sweet little stage donning a huge golden sign and luscious red velvet curtains.

The dining room upstairs is a bit more interesting, with gothic pictures on the walls and chapel-shaped windows, long bench tables mixed with smaller square ones, and a small bar with limited stock. You can watch the comedy from this room via TV screens whilst you eat.

The Atmosphere
Excitement fills the air as everyone crowds into the main room and takes their seats. Most people know what’s in store as Up the Creek is frequented regularly by locals and avid stand up fans. They have some huge comedic names here quite regularly, and even the names you don’t recognise are of a high standard and will have your sides splitting in no time. The compares are also extremely funny and relaxed on the stage, giving a great warm up for the acts. The whole night, although local, is very professional.

The Music
The DJ plays a soundtrack for each comedian as they arrive on stage and also before the show starts, not to mention the cheesy disco afterwards that goes on until 2am. Playing a mix of old and new chart and pop tunes is fun, and the disco opens for the general public too, so it really fills up and creates a nightclub atmosphere with cheaper drinks.

The Food
The food at Up the Creek is Thai and very authentic, which is a pleasant surprise. You don’t expect to come to a comedy club and receive good tucker for a fiver. Try the green chicken curry or the moreish Thai fish cakes with delicate lemongrass and coriander flavours coming through the chilli and lime. Also excellent are the deliciously crispy spring rolls - for a couple of quid you cant go wrong. There’s not a huge choice but it's a very tasty menu and you can’t fault the quality of the food.

The Drink
Beer can be bought by the pitcher, which is a great idea – saving walking back and forth to the bar after every pint. The drinks are reasonably priced and bar staff friendly and helpful. Bottles include Smirnoff ice, Magners, Becks, J20 – the usual stuff. The house wine is a little too tart though.

The Last Word
Hilarious sums it up. You can eat, drink, and certainly be merry here so if your weekends have been pretty dull lately a trip to Up the Creek will put the smile back on your face.
