The ViewLondon Review
A matter of seconds from Oxford Street, the underground enclaves of Wax offer the perfect daytime retreat from the shopping hordes. The VenueAfter a frenzied bout of retail therapy there’s nothing like descending into the dark of the basement bar at Wax and flopping in one of their luxurious deep red leather booths. Not only that, the discreet side street doorway setting means you could easily end up with the place to yourself until the after work crowd piles in. Once they do though, beware, the abundant booths are quickly taken, making it worthwhile to ring in advance to reserve one for free.
The AtmosphereWax has a timeless retro feel vaguely reminiscent of an American diner - a super-stylish American diner with mood lighting that is. With Emap based next door in Mappin House there’s always a smattering of arty types about, but unlike many media hangouts Wax isn’t too trendy for its own good. In fact, the commercial funky house played by the DJ makes it a popular party venue for all businesses in the vicinity, despite the restricted dancefloor space.
The FoodThe menu is a mix of traditional British and Mediterranean dishes. If you’re feeling peckish there are the usual snacks and nibbles such as chunky chips, or if you need something a little more filling there’s a small choice of warm meals. The platters prove enormously popular with groups, although you could always have one to yourself if you’re really ravenous. There are also desserts and additional options on the lunchtime menu, all fairly priced.
The DrinkEven with three bars it can take a while to get served during busy periods, partly because the main bar is so long that those serving have trouble keeping tabs on who’s been waiting longest. Another problem is that some bar staff are too busy showing off their cocktail mixing skills, but at least once they get round to serving you it tends to be with a smile. There’s a far better choice of wine than there is of beer, and the wine is particularly good value during happy hour but prices aren’t exorbitant at any time.
The Last WordWax may not be the most original bar in the West End but there’s also nothing here to cause offence. As well as providing a haven from the busy shopping district above, it’s always worth popping in during happy hour and if you get ensconced in a booth you may well end up spending the night.
