Wessex House may have lost some of its lustre but this fun, kitchy venue remains disco to the core.

The Venue
Ask your mum and dad, and they'll tell you that a nightclub or dance hall has stood on this spot since the '70s. In its heyday, revellers flocked here to listen to amplified music having bounded out of Clapham Junction station, which is just across the road. The station is still there but the area has changed.

For now, Wessex House soldiers on. The scruffy looking entrance to the club is lifted somewhat by a glitter ball and original brass handrails. At the top of the stairs you will find a large room divided by a quirky, glass partition that's decorated with lavish mirrors. On one side, there's a bar and around it comfy sofas and knee high wooden tables. The same furnishings are scattered around the other side of the partition - but less so - which means more room for dancing.

The Atmosphere
If you're looking for unabashed fun with a boozy, dress down, twentysomething crowd then Wessex House is for you. Expect a mainly local set made up of couples, bronzed girls, and guys wearing rugby shirts with upturned collars. Thankfully, no one here takes themselves too seriously.

The Music
With a curved DJ booth taking pride of place, more glitter balls and powerful amps, this large space needs a DJ to spin floor-filling tracks, which is exactly what you get. A blend of chart music, commercial RnB and cheesy pop means everyone goes home happy.

The Drink
The bar has a ramshackle look with its shelves buckling under the weight of wines and spirits. A stash of dusty Champagne bottles lurks somewhere behind the bar, but sadly no draught beer. Fortunately, prices at Wessex House are more pub than club.

The Last Word
Clubs like Wessex House are the last of a dying bunch. If you want to stir memories of disco the way it used to be, it’s well worth giving this place a whirl.
