Went when oneman, ben ufo and jackmaster played was an excellent night with an amazing atmosphere. The drinks prices were pretty resonable as well, no more expensive than other venues round the area. Well worth a night out.
i like the underground feel of the venue and the music is always really good. i've enjoyed it every time i've been there.
Went to XOYO on new years eve and was having a great time until i went to the toilet. While i was washing my hands 1 of the male security decided to walk in and started checking under the cubicle doors. As a woman i feel totally disgusted and i didnt feel comfortable using the toilets after that. Surely the club should have a female security to check female toilets.
I wont be going back to XOYO again unless they get rid of the pervert. I should have called the police really.
worst venue in London full stop
Be very careful when attending this venue. Super aggressive bouncers especially around clearing out time. Could quite easily get out of hand.
That apart, pretty average kind of place. This place is very heavily promoted, so you have to wonder about the independence of some of the 5* reviews on here. Either that or they have never been anywhere else.
All my favourite acts seem to end up playing in this place. It is a migratory point for leftfield artists up there with inter-war Paris. The space itself is no Rue Fontaine but I like the raw feel. It's about the music, not the decor and cocktails. Still, if they start serving White Russians i'll be in this joint even more.
After seeing so many bad reviews I was a little worried. However, the venue was perfectly fine. Went to see Sophie Ellis Bextor play and encountered no issues. The sound was fine and aircon was all good. The place is small, so if it was really packed getting to the bar would probably be a nightmare...but then that can be the same anywhere. Great gig venue.
I can't agree more with the last review. What should have been a truly top gig was ruined by the lack of air-con/fan action - which was unfair on both the audience and the band. It was the first gig I have been to at XOYO and I feel it may be my last. I don't want to support a venue that has to lower itself to such blatent money-making tactics at the expense of music-makers and music-lovers. Shame on XOYO.
From an avid gig-goer who likes to support good venues.
Went to see a gig there (Herman Dune). It was a sell out crowd. So rather than relishing the fact the venue was full, the management, no doubt in order to make (even) more money, turned the air con off, which meant that a brilliant gig by the band, turned into two hours of torture, as people tried not to faint (including the band) in ever increasing sweltering temperatures. Ventilation fans which were clearly visible to the audience, were also turned off! The toilets only supplied hot water to overheated punters. Some people could not take the heat and left. If the air con was faulty, the audience was not told. So I can only assume it was a money making endeavor to increase orders at the bar. Shame, shame on XOYO. As I say, it ruined an otherwise ace gig. Please vote with your feet. Avoid like the plague!
It seems a influx of outstanding to poor ratings have been attributed to XOYO in this user review. I'm a huge event attendee, going all around London to seek out great events and I can honestly say that nothing compares to the calibre of events at XOYO.
As a previous review said, working with great independent promoters to put on fantastic nights seems to be doing me and my mates well when we're looking for a good night out, bearing in mind it only opened last year!
Where else could you find one week going to see hip hop legend Mos Def at a charity night (yes for Ben Sherman) and then last night going to see an amazing performance from Brooklyn experimental group Gang Gang Dance.
Staff have always been courteous to me, nice enough is what you expect from staff these days, lets be honest.
Long may this venue continue to thrive, I know i'll certainly keep going if they keep putting on fantastic events.
shocking club. its pretty new im led to believe, but it needs to be knocked down and re-built if im being honest. no more needs to be said really.
on the plus side, a mate complained about his night and they re-funded the entrance fee. so fair play, although deservedly so not many clubs would do that.
Had an amazing night at Bugged Out. Sound was good, venue great, staff fine. Well worth the money & would recommend to anyone. I think the bad reviews on here must be from other venues jelous of XOYO!
As a highly experienced young clubber, I really felt the need to come on this website to plead to whoever may read it to steer well clear of XOYO. It is quite literally both the worst club in london and the world I have ever been unfortunate to visit. Why? Well I dont know where to start to be honest. Lets begin with the soundsystem- complete utter rubbish. There is no bass in XOYO, and you can have a conversation quite easily standing right in front of the speakers. When your at a rave night this is totally unacceptable. Closing time- 3am? Do me a favour mate. That is cheese club closing times. Prices- £20 on the door for a substandard club that closes at 3am. Outrageous. I could go on, but to be frank I dont want to waste any more time on the subject, and make myself more angry about who absolutely ridiculously poor excuse for a club this is. My only hope is that people boycott XOYO and it banishes forever, because they are taking the complete p#ss with XOYO and I dont want to see other people ripped off like I was. Do not waste your time and hard earned cash at this Pathetic club, its really not worth it. Do yourself a favour and go to fabric or something, its cheaper, louder and a hell of a lot better. I hope you see sense.
Hottest venue in London for both live music / djs. Highly recommended.
Would be no stars if I could...
My worst night out by far. I wish I had saved my money and done anything else but go there.
The layout was awful, so bad. And it really does ruin your night. People are constantly pushing past you to get to the toilets, bars or just to get anywhere. This is seriously annoying!
To get up the stairs is a nightmare, with the entrances to the smoking area, top room and bottom room all converging in one area, leading to absolute chaos there, which only get worse as the night goes on.
What ever the capacity was, they must have let at least 200+ people too many in. There was nowhere to move at all.
Drinks. Choice was pitiful, no draught beers, and no bottles that are worth spending £4 on. And after 12, it is £5 for a bottle of Kopperberg. £5! Really?! In a venue like that, those prices are just insulting
Basically. Please don't go. Please. You will regret it if you do go.
XOYO appears to have many flaws, unfortunately. Its is cold and uninviting, and for a club of its type, has a criminally early curfew time. Badly designed, poor lay out, basic lighting, white walls (doesnt work in a club!) what a shame. Even more of a shame since the people behind it are behind some damn fine events that go on in london (think bugged out, field day etc) so I expected a whole lot more. Seems to me it was rushed in an attempt to cash in on the whole shoreditch thing. Its gona have great line ups becasue of who has controlling interests, but I would advise against going here, no matter who's playing. You will pay over the odds to get kicked out into the cold at 3am wondering why the hell you bothered. I went to a bugged out night here, one of the best promotions in london, and despite knowing it was closing at 3, was still intrigued about the venue. Well, to be honest, it was half empty (room 2 derelict) and a total let down. Boring night in fact, had I not had some treats up my sleeve, it would have been utter tosh if truth be told. Massive disappointment in my book. Sort it out guys please!
Incredibly rude and bitchy girl on the quest list queue, horrible bouncers, crap small room upstairs, massive cloakroom queue, very poor layout downstairs and when I was there there was no air con resulting in a very sweaty and uncomfortable night! It was literally like a sauna. Basically don't go there it is the sort of night that will make you wish you stayed in and saved your money!
Oh and had to wait about 40 mins to climb 20 steps to get out of the bloody place because as mentioned below all areas flood into one small staircase.
FACT put on Joy Orbison & Ramadanman last night so a bunch of us headed to XOYO for the first and last time.
The promoter on the door was a polite and accomodating girl who allowed me to add a couple of names to the door at short notice, where the rest of us had tickets already. That was the last pleasant interaction with any staff.
The doormen were aggressive confrontational and possibly not wholly inappropriate given shoreditch attracts more and more stag parties from across the UK. Cloakroom staff were obnoxious and snooty. I was physically pinned against the wall twice while queuing for the cloakroom, by a doorman fighting a losing battle of space management shouting 'up against the wall!'
Up yours mate
A tiny conduit leads upstairs, downstairs and to the smoking area, as another reviewer has already said, this is the primary downfall of the clubs design, but ancient turbosound speakers that look as though they've been tatted off a 1980s police auction don't help. Upstairs sounded poor most of the night. Downstairs was better but in my humble, not loud enough.
Clientelle included many young aggressive males with a sprinkling of about 20% women. I really tried to enjoy myself but I came up against so much territorial pissing I got pretty bored and left.
This review obviously is negative but I accept full responsibility. Shoreditch is blackpool on a saturday and i chose to be there on a saturday. There's no point moaning about drinks prices cos you know that pints gonna cost £4.50 and you know your change is gonna be served up on a silver platter. XOYO is by its own measure a success; it's tapped into the infinite market of hoxton and the average age last night was probably 22 & it was rammed. I enjoy FACT magazine and RA etc but if this is their target market for sojourns into clubland I'll pass on the next one. I'm extremely relieved I never visited the Lock Tavern sessions. If you're a seasoned clubber skip XOYO. It's shit
Surely anyone with experience of running a club realises that if both rooms, the smoking area, the cloakroom and the entrance/exit all lead into the same tiny corridor, the whole system is going to implode.
Went for Erol. When we arrived we literally had to drag each other through the crowd. Then queued up for 30mins to put coats away. At the end of the night the queue for coats went all the way down the stairs and back into the main room. I waited an hour while possible the world's most incompetent cloakroom staff tried to wrap their heads around the idea of taking a numbered ticket and handing over a coat.
Unless there is a total revamp and rethink about how people are funnelled through the space available, going there will always be a painful, frustrating experience. Sad as it could have been great. It isn't and I'm not sure they will be able to sort it out. shame.

I agree with what was said at the bottom, that the queue at the cloakroom was very long, so i took action and spoke to the manager. The manager was very helpful and forthcoming and ensured me that there will be a new cloakroom before the next Bugged Out! show. So that should solve those problems.
I dont agree on whatever was said about the sound. I actually thought the sound was pretty amazing- perfectly clear till the end of the room.
Its a brand new club, and like any other venue there might be problems at the beginning but I think the great line up makes up for all the difficulties!
Such a disappointment. Was really excited about this club opening as were all of my friends, but to a man we have all been so unimpressed with it. Aside from all the teething problems (delayed opening, lack of late licence and power cuts), the place has some pretty serious flaws.
We were there for Erol Alkan on Saturday night and it just couldn't deal with the crowds. The whole club centres around this lobby where all the rooms feed into. The queues all sort of merge into one another and it creates chaos. The main room on first impression is really cool; loads of room and 3 well placed and well priced bars (with friendly staff). But the busier the place gets the more you realise how poorly designed it is because the stage is right next to the stairs which means that there is this enormous bottleneck as soon as it kicks off. I would say only 1/3 of the room is properly occupied because it is so centred around just one area. Apparently the queue for coats at the end took 2hrs.
The insanely rude girl on the clipboard outside topped things off; one of those "you guys are so lucky to be in my neighbourhood" types. Little patronising when you live 2 streets away. Anyway, lets hope it all improves. How the guys who own it have gone from the End to this is crazy. Will give it a go when they get a late licence.
One of the worst clubs I've ever been to. Not just in London, but in the whole of europe. After queing an age to get in, I then qued for the cloakroom and then for the bar, before getting around 45mins of dance time. An hour before closing, the cloakroom que was already spilling down the stairs and it took almost an hour to get my coat back, where I was met with a very stoppy, rude attendant. The coats are stored in some random order that noone seems to understand and the number of people pushing past to grab theor belongings is ridiculous. If you dont want to spend a night queuing and getting pushed around by smelt scenesters then stay away. XOYO is total crap!
I saw Amiina at XOYO on Tuesday, and was massively disappointed by this venue. Here’s why:
Their air con/fan produced such a loud drone it had to be switched off in order to appreciate the music — resulting in a stuffy, hot and sweaty environment. Amiina said: “This is the most sweaty gig we have ever played”
The placement of the bar, and the ‘stage area’, is less than ideal and doesn’t make the most of what is already a cramped space.
The sound system is not up to scratch, or is not being implemented effectively, as the sound it produced was harsh and cold.
But, the worst sin committed by this venue was the appalling lack of acoustic isolation. Amiina’s gig was marred by vibration and sound spilling in from the dodgy club next door. Appalling.
Oh year, and the (limited selection of) drinks were overpriced.
XOYO: you fail on all counts and I won’t be returning. Boooo!
