I've enjoyed the trailer and was looking forward to seeing the film but it's not showing in Plymouth.

A film of caricatures and over the top performances especially from Lesley Manville. Mike Leigh seems to have strayed out of the TV soaps that would be his natural milieu but without the plot. All the cliches here: growth - geddit - allotment sequences, you reap what you sow - got so tired of that smug couple trooping into their overcrowded house with their garden booty. Too much eating, too much syrup too much 'acting'.

Agree with the smugness but not about Lesley Manville's performance, she's what holds the film together. Without her it would indeed be all caricature. Manville is bang on, she is excruciatingly lonely, aimless and dependent. On the whole though, surprisingly 'empty' for Leigh, and the ending is just inconclusively cowardly.
