Slow-paced, yes, but not dull - except inasmuch as it showed how dull the GDR must have looked and felt in the early 80s. This is no 'action movie' but I felt there was plenty of suspense and tension. I too found the eponymous Barbara hard to like at first, but you do end up empathising with her position.

It's clearly not for everyone - it's a film for fans of European cinema, and a good one for people learning German - clear dialogue and not too fast!
