Danny Leigh on Film 2011 made this his film of the week just above The Fighter, I can now see why. There is some beautiful photography which makes the cinematography of many of the shots superb both inside and outside. The rolling sea with the haunting score is captured beautifully.
You question the characters and the likelihood of their actions, but this is a good thing as it makes you think and reappraise common misconceptions. It is often the weak and naive characters in gangs who will make use of knives and eventually take pleasure from the pain they can inflict and the status they think it gives them. This was probably true of the 1940's, the 60's and may well be even today.

Critics seem to doubt that Rose would fall for the likes of Pinky, but they have missed all the subtle clues that have been laid out. An unloving and estranged mother, an abusive father, living in squalid conditions with no friends to relate to and all of a sudden someone shows some interest in her. It's a classic scenario. So many times in life I have been baffled why some women seem to fall for rogues, and in this movie we see it again. For some people if it is not laid out on a plate and explained in script, then they never get it, but I think it's all there in the vision.

In the original you had no doubt that Pinky disliked Rose and was using her, but this film is different and I'm still wondering if in fact Pinky did have feelings for Rose after all. And for me that's what can make a good film because I'm still thinking about it.

The visuals and music are top class, the script could have been better, some of the characters were a let down, (why even have Colleoni in it?), but as a whole I was encapsulated by the experience.
I may well go to see it again before the DVD comes out
