This is a superb, five-star film on all counts. Michael Caine's acting is representative of what we have come to expect of him - coolness and understatement personified. We could not take our eyes off the screen from the word go and it's a real adrenaline rush to see the character of Harry Brown clean up the estate. The plot is not, as Matthew Turner suggests, reactionary but instead a 'tell it as it is' account of lives for many ordinary, innocent people living on bleak, crime-ridden estates. It makes a change to get a plot - and plenty of descriptive visual detail - that faces the harsh reality head on. The film also runs refreshingly counter to the ageist stance of so much media pulp. Harry Brown is a true urban hero, and Michael Caine's playing of him has the potential to chip away at if not turn around some ingrained negative / patronising attitudes towards anyone over 60. The contrast between Harry Brown's clear, action packed response to his friend's murder and the ineptitude of the police serves to highlight what we need and why our society is in such a mess. As the character of Harry Brown says in the film, the violent criminals who rule too many of our estates and streets engage in violence for entertainment, not to express their belief in a cause. Bring back the troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, and let them take over from where Harry Brown left off - cleaning up the country and turning it into a safe place to live. A truly inspiring and entertaining film.
