Three out of Five stars
Running time: 93 mins

Enjoyable romantic comedy that succeeds thanks to likeable characters and some good gags, despite falling foul of all the usual rom-com traps.

What’s it all about?
Piper Perabo (you may remember her from Coyote Ugly) stars as Rachel, a young woman who is finally tying the knot with her long-term boyfriend Hector (Matthew Goode). However, while walking up the aisle, she catches the eye of lesbian florist Luce (Lena Headey) and when the two women become friends, Rachel suddenly finds herself questioning her own relationship.

The Good
There’s a definite Four Weddings and a Funeral vibe to Imagine Me and You, given that it features a wedding and revolves around a set of wise-cracking posh people. Perabo (sporting a flawless British accent) and Headey make an attractive, likeable couple and it’s only because of their chemistry that we root for them to get together – it’s worth noting that if the Luce character was a man, s/he would be deeply unsympathetic (as would Rachel).

Fortunately, there’s fine comic support from Celia Imrie and Anthony Head (as Rachel’s parents) and from Darren Boyd, who gets all the best lines as Hector’s unscrupulous best friend Coop. The film also features the lovely Eva Birthistle as Luce’s best friend but she’s given way too little to do. Will someone please cast her in more films?

The film gains points for having the guts to make the central romance more than a fling and it has some interesting things to say about the idea of love at first sight.

The Bad
The main problem is that the film falls into the usual rom-com trap of having to hurt its nice-guy character in order for the leads to get together. It also can’t resist pulling out the usual cliches towards the end.

Worth seeing?
In short, this is an enjoyable rom-com that pushes all the right buttons, despite its flaws. Worth seeing.
