Lawless had all the ingredients to be a good film but for some reason it just didnt seem to come together for me. The acting was decent enough, but the somewhat gratuitous violence was too much at times.

A hard-boiled hillbilly yarn of moonshiners and cops in small-town Prohibition USA, with lashings of ultra-violence. In many ways we have seen it all before, but it is made exceptional by the first-rate performances and by Nick Cave's rather wonderful score - listen out for the hillbilly version of the Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat. Inspired! Tom Hardy is amazing - dominating every scene he is in with his huge monosyllabic presence. Shia LaBeouf is great as the 'runt of the litter' and gives an emotional performance that is very pleasing on the eye. But it is Guy Pearce who in many ways steals the show as the grotesque pantomime villain - he camps it up big time and obviously enjoys himself immensely. He makes an excellent villain - no doubt the superhero movies will be knocking on his door to play the next evil megalomaniac bent on world domination. The movie itself does seem to lack something, however, and I left wanting just a little bit more. Enjoyable none the less.
