Highly enjoyable but ultimately confused biopic. The recreation of 70s America is pitch perfect and the acting is good - Seyfried in particular expertly captures the pathos of the character. Sharon Stone is excellent as the repressed and repressing mother. Great too to see the wonderful Bobby Cannavale on screen. But the film can't quite decide whether it's a light hearted sex romp or a grim study of domestic violence and abuse. Perhaps this sums up the paradox of Lovelace herself, but without an integrated vision this film never quite takes off and soars the way a great movie should. Interesting that the movie has 2 directors. You can tell. Like watching two different movies spliced together - and not helped by some clumsy editing.
