Action maestro Tony Scott sadly disappointed me with this remake of the 1987 actioner Man on Fire. The film at first looks like a sharp enjoyable thriller, but by the end the whole thing becomes a silly overblown action movie despite Scott's desperate efforts to keep it interesting. Denzel Washington is about the only thing charming about this film. His patient cool attitude adds some sheer toughness and sparkle to a pointless vengeance thriller with an unbelievably unoriginal plot. I was allready disappointed with Scot's previous film Spy Game, but Man on Fire pushes things to the very limit. It's fiendishlty violent in action sequences that really didn't need to be so bloody.

The film tells the story of John Creasy (Washington), an CIA agent who takes up care of a young girl (Dakota Fanning) after the death of her father. However when she is kidnapped by a gang of Drug Cartels in Mexico, Creasy goes on a bloody one-man carnage across Mexico. Extracting a nasty too horrible to watch revenge on the girl's kidnappers. Washington's portrayal of Creasy is certainly a must-see, but otherwise this is just another one of those daft gunslinging pieces of nonsense like the ones Steven Seagal used to do back in the 70s and 80s.
