No Country For Old Men is a masterfully crafted movie adapted from a novel with a similar title. The Coen Brothers prove they are still on top of their game. The film is a haunting one and stays with you even after the cineplex. It elicits powerful performances from the three lead actors Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem , who won an Oscar for his role. Tommy lee Jones is in familiar territory (The Fugitive, US Marshalls) and plays a beat up, disillusioned small town sheriff in a small Texas Town. The movie opens at the scene of a small bloody massacre. An apparent drugs transaction gone horribly wrong. There are a half dozen bodies next to pick up trucks, the aftermath of an apparent shoot-out. The Josh Brolin Character chances upon the scene before the cops. His hyena instincts are too run away with the 2 million dollar booty he finds on the scene before the cops come in. What follows is a cat and mouse chase. The Brolin character goes on the run and seeks to outsmart any competition for his loot. He however didn’t count on one small detail. The formidable competitor that is the Bardiem character. No Country is indeed an excellent movie with its exploration of the theme of chance , a favorite theme of the Coen brothers, remember Fargo?. The movie is seemingly shot with no sound track except for the original scene sounds without much sound effect. This gives the movie an authentic, real time, real life feel to it. The film sound editing almost tells a story of its own. The three lead characters roles are intelligently connected with the plot . Javier Bardem steals the show and most of his acting is more body language than screen play. He inhabits the role with a wicked faithfulness. He is the angel of death in the movie and is appearance is synonymous with death itself. No country is a violent movie almost in the Tarantino frame. So, this is really no date movie. But for the beauty of the story, the award-winning performances, sound editing and authen

I just saw the movie last night with a few friends. We got excited only to be dismayed. I don't know what the critics are raving about. Feeling sorry for the Coen Brothers is more like it perhaps??. The movie was exciting for a while albeit horrificly bloody for the masses but the ending put it in the "Crummy" category as one of the worst movies of the year. Hollywood, like our foreign policy these days, has gone blind in seeing through the muck. Save your mulla on this one. It’s not even worth buying the DVD unless you want to destroy the mood of a nice evening.

Welcome back Joel and Ethan, we missed you. This the Brothers Coen back on their very best form, this time with a pretty straight-up thriller, and damn, is it thrilling. I confess to peeking through my fingers at the screen a couple of times.

The trademark Coen Bros quirky humour is still there, albeit in reduced form. Tommy Lee Jones's sheriff character is recognisably one of theirs. The rest of the cast shine, the script si excellent, the directing flawless. It looks fantastic, too, what with all the wild-west feel to the scenery.

Oh, and for the record, unlike Will I thought Transformers was utter tosh, but we still agree on this one.

When I left the theatre I was thinking, 'What the hell was that really about?'. I will have to see this again at some point, as there was quite a lot to take in. I got lost very quickly during 'Millers Crossing' so I suppose if you're not used to Coen brothers films you may need to take notes.

I was actually on the edge of my seat through some parts of this film, and it made me jump more then any horror I've seen in a long time. I suppose it's because they made the bad guy so damn scary, and I loved the method in which he dispatched his first victim.

Anyway this film stood head and shoulders above anything I've seen in the last few months. Definitely up there with Transformers and Superbad for me! :)
