I was hesitant to see this movie as I had a few misgivings about a British dance movie actually being that good. But the thought of seeing Diversity and Flawless at their best in film and the fact that my 12year old neice wanted to see it. I thought why not? I should have gone with my gut instinct. Let's start with what was right about the movie. The last dance sequence that was worth the money to see. That's about it for the good. Now onto the bad. Out of touch lead actress that was not convincing to me of someone who can streetdance, long extended shots of the lead actress in a crop top walking around her bedroom.. was this really necessary? The acting was pitiful from most of the actors apart from some of the snooty ballet dancers who I think did a good job of convincing us they were from a privileged background. There was no substance it felt as light as a mouse. Charlotte Rampling and her previous student whom I'm sure there could have been a whole movie on was the highlight for me and without her there would have been no class whatsoever. The characters were cliched especially the lead actresses best friend who looked 10 years older than her and also unfortunately was given a typical urban mouthy role to play...where is the originality??? The club scenes in the movie could have been any MTV Base music video...what is going on?
The 3D highlights were in short demand at times I actually took my 3D glasses off because I couldn't see the point.
Its a shame this movie will be marketed as the British answer to Step Up because to me it was a Step Down down down and a very low point for British cinema. In the words of my friend this is a cut and paste movie. If you have seen Saved the last dance, Step Up and a numerous amount of other US dance movies then you will have seen this a million times over but better. Needless to say my neice actually enjoyed the movie so what does a 33 year old aunt know! Neecy B
