I suspect many of you reading this will, like me, rather stick rusty forks in their legs than watch a musical, and I approached Sweeney Todd with all due sense of trepidation, hoping it would be up their with the musicals I have liked in the past (Rocky Horror springs to mind).

I'm glad to report that I need not have worried, I hugely enjoyed this film. Depp is magnifcently creepy as Todd, and thankfully restricts his singing to Shatner-esque spoken word for much of the time. Bonham-Carter has her fair share of witticisms, not to mention a welcome display of decolletage. Their duets are the best songs in the film, I'd say, particularly the Pie set piece.

The sets design is a wonder, it's almost like watching an animated dickens novel at times. The supporting cast in Spall (come on Tim!) and Rickman (hamming it up as usual) do their parts well.

And lastly, the film is exquisitely gory. I haven't seen that much blood since Nightmare on Elm Street, although I struggle to see why it's a certificate 18.

Overall, much recommended.
