Anton Corbijn's The American is not a film for non-stop action, but still makes a fabulous ice-cold thriller that follows a hitman (George Clooney) living in fear in a town in northern Italy while on a mission. It's a beautifully-made film wit a spectacular landscape and the incredible suspense makes it all the more worth it. Clooney is not in his usual charming charismatic form in an unusually subdued performance, but he plays his role extremely well establishing himself as a more versatile actor. The action is restricted too violent opening scene and a stunning climatic shootout yet that#'s the whole nature of the movie. The film in conclusion makes a powerful riveting hitman thriller that is sure to impress as a a slow arty thriller, but those expecting loads of hard action will be disappointed. A subtle twisting movie that develops a character so cold-hearted we all end up falling in love with him.
