Firstly, let me admit a bias. I'm a big fan of Tolkien; I'm not a big fan of Peter Jackson. He is a mediocre director who lacks subtlety. His faults are very much in evidence in this movie. It's pretty much just lots of fighting and jumping around with minimal emotional engagement or characterisation. The Two Towers stood on its own as a movie. This doesn't. There is no catharsis of any kind - it basically takes the quest forward a bit and then ends on a cliff-hanger. The score is as unmemorable as the drama. Save your money and go see the third part in the trilogy next year - you won't miss anything by not seeing this over-egged promo for a video game.
