Not nearly as good as your reviewer claims. It left me with the same feeling as did Eyes Wide Shut - that a weighty and too-deliberate approach had been applied to too flimsy material. After one hour it felt like it was repeating itself and the two main protagonists hardly developed from that point. I write as someone who thinks There Will be Blood is one of the truly great American movies. However a director's previous accomplishments should not blind us to present inadequacies. The difference there might be that that film was (loosely) based on an existing novel, whereas here the screenplay is entirely Anderson's. Whatever, we should allow that great directors sometimes make unsatisfying films: Kubrick as above, Malick with The Tree of Life and Anderson with this one. Despite its virtues, especially in the performances, music and cinematography, this film is too long, too ponderous and ultimately taxes one's patience.
