Go to the loo first. This lasts a bladder-busting 1 hour 38 minutes. No-one speaks for the first 20 minutes and it goes downhill from there. Epic it certainly isn't with a very weak story line and a ridiculous finish. Day-Lewis's performance teeters on the edge of hamminess. With a voice mix between James Stewart and John Houston, he relies on the camera concentrating on him for 80% of the film.
Over-long, pretentious and without any message or meaning, this is one to watch on TV on Boxing Day when you can happily fall asleep and miss nothing.

A rather harsh review from young Dizzles there, but I have to go along with the general sentiment.

Yes, it's rather too long (and it's 2 hours 38 minutes, not 1), but the dialogue-free opening 20 is wonderful, setting up the feel of the first hour and a half with some hypnotic cinamatography. The first half of the film is just splendid, with Day-Lewis dominating every scene, and rightly so.

After that, though, whoever was at the tiller goes for a break, since the film loses its direction and narrative at that point. It slowly degrades from then on, leaving with you with a peculiar, pointless and borderline spiteful ending.

I'm confused. The directing is excellent, the acting flawless, the photography breathtaking.... but the whole thing is somehow deeply unsatisfying. Who did that happen?
