Breathtaking special-effects and great action make Thor a worthy new entry to the superhero movie genre, but there's something missing. The main thing nort seen in Thor is the charm and wit you'd expect from any superhero movie as in Iron Man where Robert Downey Jr. brought some sassy charisma to the screen at it's very best. Even the biggest Marvel fans will agree that the film's mean moody tale could have done with a few more jokes. Chris Hemsworth is ultimately dislikeable in the lead sharing an unsatisfying chemistry with a very flat Natalie Portman while Tom Hidleston's Loki is too much of a hot-tempered sibling rather than a marvelous villain. Thor is good fun all the same and a watchable flick that should give you something to chew on before The Avengers next year, but it could have been a bit more effective in keeping it's promise as a stunning summer blockbuster and it's no Iron Man.

I really wanted to give this film a higher rating because in all but one respect it is very well done. It has just the right mix of tongue in cheek & taking itself seriously that works well with comic book adventures, humour, good special effects, and sympathetic characters.

The only thing it lacked was any suspense. Right from the start we could see that Thor was invincible, and an order of magnitude more powerful than anyone else ... apart from his Dad who is far more powerful ... but he doesn't count cos he's obviously on Thor's side.

Yes he briefly looses "his power", but we all know that he will soon get it back.

They obviously have Thor 2 planned, and I hope that this film does well enough to get that made with the same director ... only this time with some worthy opposition scripted.
