Overblown historical nonsense. Troy tries to be a staggering epic like Ridley Scott's Gladiator, but the effect is like watching 2 hours of some silly action movie. With the newly revived Ancient epic genre, Troy uses a huge amount of special effects and a lot of battles, but there's no meaning to it all. The film is jumbled-up, laughably silly and generally a disaster in almost every way. Unlike Gladiator, you don't feel moved by the film. Tonnes of over-the-top brutal fight scenes ultimately leads up to a rushed disappointing climax. Within about 2 minutes, Troy's down in flames. The acting is also particularly bad with Brad Pitt making an awful Achilles while Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom strut around like wimps. The presence of great actors like Peter O'Toole and Brian Cox are considerably wasted. The only impressive part is Diane Kruger's Helen who stuns us with her beauty. Troy hardly sticks to the Iliad and goes mad with silliness pushing things to the very limit. Almost unbearable to watch and a film that makes another disaster on Wolfgang Petersen's CV. I remember the day when Petersen made classics like Das Boot. Now he's just throwing his career away with this ridiculous historical drama and the reckless Perfect Storm.
