Even if the film does manage to show some nice images and a few good scenes, I thought this fantastic novel was a bit wasted on a director who considers handheld camera to be the stylistic answer to everything. The cinematography does occasionally work in the film's favour but it is also often too dark and out of focus - I found myself sometimes struggling to see what was going on and making sense of the narrative. I also thought that making Heathcliff black was simplistic and a tad too 'equal opportunities'.
The difference between the younger/ older Heathcliff and Cathy was apparent(as was their lack of acting training), but didn't bother me that much as it was consistent with the film's 'aesthetic', at least.

So in a nutshell: the sheer brilliance of the novel does manage to occasionally break through in a film that is too much in love with itself.
For someone who has not read Emily Bronte's classic it might be an even bumpier ride.
