A British soldier killed in a gun-battle with the Taliban in the Helmand province of Afghanistan on Friday has been named as Private Jason Lee Rawstron, 23.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed the identity of Private Rawstron, who belonged to the 2nd battalion of the Parachute Regiment which was deployed in the dangerous southern region of the country.

He was on a routine patrol when shots were exchanged with local militants.

The MoD said Private Rawstron "stood out as a soldier of note", describing him as a man of "professionalism and maturity".

"He is remembered as a quiet man but a tower of strength and one to whom the others in his platoon looked up to, with a quiet but authoritative air and a hint of mischief about him earning him the nickname 'Suspect'," a spokesperson explained.

"His friends will remember him for his steadfast reliability, his broad smile and his magic daysack which always seemed to contain exactly what was needed in any situation."

Private Rawstron leaves behind his mother, father, brother Graham and his girlfriend Michaela, to whom he was devoted, the MoD added.

His mother, Mandy Rawstron, said: "It is impossible to describe the loss of Jason. He was the perfect son, grandson, brother and boyfriend."

Jason's father, Gary Rawstron, added: "I wish I could take Jason's place and have him home. I will miss you son.

"The pain of losing you is unbearable, but I know you were so proud of all that you did.

"My heart goes out to all parents who have ever lost a child."
