Cats composer gets classical Brit

News image
Andrew Lloyd Webber was given an award for his outstanding contribution to music at a Classical Brits bash hosted by Mylene Klass at London's Royal Albert Hall.

Lord Lloyd Webber is more famous for his West End musicals such as The Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar and Cats but at the awards ceremony last night it was his classical music that was honoured.

The Grammys have previously recognised his work in classical music. He received the statuette for best contemporary classical composition from the American establishment.

He dedicated last night's award to his late father William and claimed that his brother, cellist Julian, deserved the Brit more than he did.

Another winner on the night was former BBC Young Musician of the Year Nicola Bendetti.

The 20-year-old, who first started playing the violin when she was four, received the Young British Performer prize.
