Essex openers inflict misery on Ramprakash's Surrey

An opening stand of 269 helped Essex to a 156-run win over Surrey in the Friends Provident Trophy at the Oval.

Mark Pettini (144) and Jason Gallian (117) guided the visitors to a mammoth total of 391-5.

Despite 98 from Mark Ramprakash, Surrey were bowled out for 235 after 38.2 overs.

Elsewhere, Lancashire beat rivals Yorkshire by three wickets by the Duckworth-Lewis method at Old Trafford.

The visitors made 204-7 in their 45 overs with Jacques Rudolph making 65. Chasing a revised target, Lancashire were on 216-7 when they were awarded victory thanks to 77 from Francois du Plessis.

Vikram Solanki reached 81 as Worcestershire thrashed Hampshire by nine wickets at New Road.

The Hawks were skittled out for 209 with Simon Jones doing the most damage with 5-32.

Solanki hit 12 boundaries while Steven Davies hit an unbeaten 76 as the Warriors reached their target after 27.3 overs.

Craig Spearman continued his sensational form to guide Gloucestershire to a four-wicket win over Somerset at Bristol.

Spearman followed by his half-century on Friday with an unbeaten 140 as the home side chased down their target of 291 with ten balls remaining.

Earlier, Australian Justin Langer made an unbeaten 112 off 118 balls while Zander de Bruyn made 42.

Martin van Jaarsveld hit an unbeaten ton as Kent thumped Sussex by nine wickets at Canterbury.

The Sharks were restricted to 218-9 with Michael Yardy top-scoring with 45. But the last six wickets fell for just 24 runs.

In reply, Joe Denly made an unbeaten 82 while van Jaarsveld hit 109 off just 102 balls to seal victory for the home side.

Northamptonshire beat Warwickshire by five wickets at Edgbaston with Jonathan Trott making an unbeaten 120.

Elsewhere, Nottinghamshire beat Leicestershire by two wickets at Trent Bridge, while Durham saw off Scotland by 46 runs by the Duckworth-Lewis method at The Citylets Grange.
