Heavy snow reported across large parts of UK

News image
Heavy snow has been reported across large parts of the UK today as overnight snow lowered temperatures in the country.

Snowfall was reported overnight in the north-east, Manchester, north Wales and in the Midlands in the early hours of the morning. Wintry conditions have also been reported in London with snow beginning to fall close to sunrise.

The Met office forecasts a "moderate risk" of a severe weather event today. A spokesperson for the weather service said: "Bands of snow showers will move south bringing temporary accumulations of two to five cm of snow at lower levels in many parts.

"Timing of these bands will be crucial but current information suggests that there is a risk of some disruption to transport over parts of the south early in the day.

"Further north, up to ten cm of snow is possible over the higher hills and mountains of North Wales, Northern England and Scotland."

It forecasts heavy snow and drifting snow over Highlands and Eilean Siar and Grampian and has warned of the danger of slippery roads and icy surfaces in snow affected areas.

The Met office is also expecting heavy snow in Wales, west Midlands, East of England, south-west England, London and south-east England.

The weather service also predicts snow over the next two days in large parts of the UK with periods of sleet and wintry showers in the East of England and London and south-east England on Tuesday.
