Honduras pulls out of Organisation of American States

Honduras has pulled out of regional body, the Organisation of American states (OAS), as disputes over its recent coup continue.

Last Sunday, the country's elected president Manuel Zelaya was ousted from power and sent into exile by the military who stormed his official residence. Mr Zelaya was seeking to change the country's constitution in order to enable him to be re-elected – a move that the military saw as being anti-democratic.

The OAS' chief Jose Miguel Insulza flew to the Latin American country to urge its supreme court to reinstate the former president. However, Mr Insulza was told that the court's decision was "irreversible".

Honduras has now withdrawn from the organisation saying that it no longer recognises the body's charter.

The country's deputy foreign minister said: "There is not an institutional crisis in Honduras. It has applied its own law to solve its problems."

All members of the European Union have withdrawn their ambassadors from the country following the coup. Last week, the United Nations called on "all states" to reject all governments in Honduras other than Mr Zelaya's.

Roberto Micheletti has taken over control of the country's government following the coup.
