The ousted Honduran president, Manuel Zelaya, was unable to return to his country as authorities blocked an airport runway.
Mr Zelaya's plane had to circle the Tegucigalpa airport after taking off from Washington, as the self-declared interim government refused him entry back into the country.
At least two people were also killed as troops clashed with Zelaya supporters at the airport, according to reports, with many others injured.
A week ago Mr Zelaya was ousted from his country and taken to El Salvador following a military coup, which the interim government has said was not a coup, but a constitutional transfer of power.
After failing to land a number of times, the ousted president's plane eventually landed in Nicaragua, where he has since travelled to El Salvador.
The BBC reports after Mr Zelaya's plane was refused entry into the capital, his supporters on the ground began chanting for UN peacekeepers, "We want blue helmets!", they said.
Mr Zelaya is also reported to have said he would have jumped from the plane had he had a parachute.
There is currently a night-time curfew in Honduras, put in place by the interim government, to prevent protestors from gathering.
