Kinsella family hold vigil a week after stabbing

News image
Friends and family of Ben Kinsella held a vigil at the spot in Islington where he was found dead a week ago.

The 16-year-old, who was celebrating the end of his schooldays, was stabbed during a pub fight in York Way, Holloway, north London.

Kinsella was London's 17th stab attack death this year, and his death resulted in protests against knife crime on Islington's Upper Street.

His family have appealed for the public to come forward with information about the attack and have also set up a fund and a website to raise awareness of the effect of knife and gun crime.

In a previous statement, relatives of the teenager called on youths to "put down their knives and weapons and think about the pain and suffering they will cause".

Since Kinsella's death, another 16-year-old Shakilus Townsend was also found to have died of stab wounds. News of the deaths of two French researchers in south-west London, who were found with hundreds of stab marks to their bodies, also shocked the country.

The crimes led to metropolitan police deputy commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson saying efforts against knife crime were "the number one priority for the met at this time".
