As of today, London is the first major city worldwide to launch a strategy preparing itself for the effects of climate change.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson today revealed a plan of key measures needed to prepare London for climate change, highlighting the impact that past and present carbon emissions will have on London.

Mr Johnson said: "The strategy I am launching today outlines in detail the range of weather conditions facing London, which could both seriously threaten our quality of life - particularly that of the most vulnerable people - and endanger our pre-eminence as one of the world's leading cities.

"London is not unique - all major cities such as New York and Tokyo are at risk from climate change. By producing this strategy, we put London in a position of strength."

The launch of the plans to help London prepare for climate change follows a recent report from the government's chief scientist advising that the UK will be required to adapt to a rise of four degrees in average global temperatures.
