Some 84 per cent of the UK's car clubs are located in London, with 100,000 Londoners holding memberships.
The mayor and Transport for London (TfL) have invested more than £1 million in car clubs due to their eco-friendly benefits. The funding will see 2,000 car club bays installed in the capital next year.
Boris Johnson said: "Car clubs cut Londoners costs, help reduce congestion and ease pressure on parking. They are a brilliant idea and we must surely have the largest number of users compared to any other European city."
By joining a car club in the city, Londoners who drive less than 6,000 miles a year can save up to £3,500 on the cost of owning and running their own vehicle.
Inner London boroughs are currently leading the trend with a 9,000-strong membership in Islington alone, as well as significant numbers in areas such as Westminster and Camden.
