Londoners will get £4 pint first

News image
Londoners will be the first to feel the pinch when the £4 pint arrives later this year, according to brewers.

Citing rising costs of raw materials, the British Beer and Pub Association announced that the price of beer would cross the £4 threshold, with the capital the first place to begrudgingly welcome the price hike.

The association's director of communications said: "The average price in London is now round about £3.80.

"What we are saying is that in the course of this year there will be a series of price rises which will take prices above the £4 point. And in other parts of the country the £4 pint will become a feature on the landscape."

The measure of a pub used to be how much change a customer got back from a fiver when buying two pints, but if prices continue to rise, the new measure could become a £10 note.
