A man arrested after the body of 63-year-old man was found decapitated at a property in Crumpsall, Greater Manchester, has been detained under the Mental Health Act.
Patrick McGee was found dead at his home by police officers on Monday evening. A subsequent post-mortem concluded he died from multiple stab wounds.
A 31-year-old man originally arrested on suspicion of murder held in police custody for questioning. A statement released by Grater Manchester police on Thursday confirmed he had been detained under the Act.
Yesterday Mr McGee's brothers, Jack and Dennis, paid tribute to the "kind and gentle man".
"Patrick would never have hurt anyone, he was such a kind and gentle man. He was a devout Catholic who enjoyed going to church," they said in a statement released through Greater Manchester police.
"He had lived in that house for 50 years. He had retired early in his 50s to look after our elderly parents, who died in the 1990s, and had lived alone ever since.
"This has come as a terrible shock to us. It is the sort of thing that you read about happening to other people, you never expect it to happen to yourself."
Detective Chief Inspector Howard Millington, leading this investigation, added: "This is the shocking murder of a man and our thoughts are with his family at this terrible time.
"We know people must be stunned by what has happened, and the very distressing details that have come out about Patrick's death.
"We want to reassure people that we are working hard to find out exactly what happened to him, and that even more local officers will be patrolling the area than usual."
