Mixed fortunes for Britons in Los Angeles

There was a mixed set of results for Britain's female tennis players at the East West Bank Classic as Melanie South progressed but Anne Keothavong crashed out in the first round.

South, who is the fourth best women's singles player in the UK according to the world rankings, recorded an impressive straight-sets win over Czech player Petra Kvitova.

The 22-year-old, who lost in the qualifying tournament but was given a bye into the second round after Serena Williams withdrew through injury, cruised past the world number 66 with a 6-4 6-2 win - despite going a break down early in the match.

South will face the winner of Thursday's contest between 16th seed Sania Mirza and Meng Yuan.

However, South's exceptional performance was not matched by Keothavong, who reached the second round at Wimbledon last month as well as impressing during last week's Bank of the West Classic in Stanford.

The 24-year-old, who is up to a career high of 76 in the world, lost 6-3 6-2 to American veteran Jill Craybas.
