Motherwell dent Rangers' title hopes

News image
Motherwell have dealt Rangers' title aspirations a severe blow after coming from behind to secure a 1-1 draw at Fir Park.

Rangers are now three points behind leaders Celtic with one game in hand. If they beat St Mirren on Thursday they would draw level with their Old Firm rivals but the Bhoys currently have a superior goal difference.

Rangers were beaten in the Uefa Cup on Wednesday and their exploits in Europe could now be set to cost them the title as well following a run of two draws and two defeats in their last four away league games.

Despite having played in midweek Rangers started strongly and had chances to take the lead early in the game, but neither Nacho Novo nor Daniel Cousin could find the back of the net.

It was left to defender Christian Dailly to put Rangers in front, thanks in part to Motherwell keeper Graeme Smith.

Kirk Broadfoot hoisted a free-kick into the penalty box prompting Smith to come charging off his line. He flapped and missed the ball, allowing Dailly to head into an open goal.

Cousin had a chance to double Rangers' advantage early in the second half but Smith redeemed himself with an excellent save at the feet of the striker.

Mark McGee's men were rewarded for their plucky display soon after that when Chris Porter poked the ball home from close-range.

David Clarkson had the goal at his mercy but could only head the ball against the post. Luckily for Motherwell it fell to Brian McLean who was able to feed the ball back into the box and Porter eventually bundled it in.

As the second half wore on Rangers effort in midweek appeared to catch up with them and Motherwell were able to hang on for the draw.

Rangers will now have to hope for a dramatic turnaround in goal difference. Celtic are currently seven better off, or pray Dundee United do them a favour on the final day of the season.
