German prosecutors have formally charged suspected Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk with almost 28,000 counts of being an accessory to murder during the second world war.
The 89-year-old was deported from the US in May after being accused of working as a guard in the Sobibor Nazi death camp.
He has denied the charges and claims he was captured by the Germans in Ukraine and kept as a prisoner of war.
Earlier this month, doctors declared Mr Demjanjuk fit to stand trial despite reports he was in poor health.
There is currently no confirmation on when the retired car worker will actually stand trial.
Mr Demjanjuk first travelled to the US from Europe in 1952 as a refugee and settled in Ohio.
He was later sentenced to death in Israel in 1988 for crimes against humanity but the sentence was eventually overturned.
He then returned to the US and in March this year authorities in Germany issued a warrant for his arrest.
