Kevin Nolan has claimed taking on the captaincy at Bolton Wanderers has helped him mature as a player and he has vowed to improve his overall game.
The Liverpool-born midfielder took over the armband from veteran team-mate Jay Jay Okocha during the 2005/06 season and says the increased responsibility has given him added impetus to enhance his contribution on the field.
Nolan also claims that the captaincy means he has to be more mature and avoid the unnecessary bookings and sendings off he received last term.
"I am maturing as captain and learning about the job day by day," Nolan told the club's official website.
"I have set a number of objectives for the new season – including being more disciplined on the field."
"I missed a number of games last season for needless suspensions and that was my own fault. I am learning very quickly that one has to be mature and take responsibility seriously to be a successful leader."
Nolan was yellow-carded nine times last season and was sent off once against Blackburn in the Premiership last season, but he claims controlling his famously hot temper and all-action style of play was not the only way he intended to improve.
"I also feel there are more goals in me," continued Nolan, who scored only three times last season in more than 30 league appearances.
"Last term my return was poor and I know that I am capable of scoring more goals from midfield.
"I have done it in previous seasons and I want to make a conscientious effort to having more goalscoring opportunities. I know if I can do that then I will score my fair share."
